Tribe Lacrosse Falls to No. 6 Florida

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 17, 2012) - The William and Mary lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked Florida, 21-8, at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore standout Taelor Salmon led the Tribe (2-6) with three goals on just four shots, while freshman Kaleigh Noon totaled four points (2g, 2a) and three draw controls. Freshman Ellen Shaffrey also scored twice, while junior Kyrstin Mackrides registered one goal. 

Senior Jenny Michael and junior Caitlin Murphy also came up big for the Tribe with three draw controls apiece.

Florida (8-2) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just five minutes into the game. Although a goal by Noon put W&M on the scoreboard with 24:15 showing, Florida rattled off eight of the next nine goals to build a 13-2 advantage with 12:22 remaining in the first half.

However, the College held UF scoreless during the remainder of the half and got a pair of goals by Salmon to cut the margin to 13-4 at halftime.

The Gators continued to build their lead following the intermission, as they scored the first seven goals of the second half to extend their advantage to 20-4 with 9:43 remaining.

Although W&M outscored Florida, 4-1, in the final 10 minutes, it was unable to get closer than the final margin.

Florida held a 15-12 edge in ground balls and owned a 19-12 advantage in draw controls.

Brittany Dashiell led the Gators with five goals, while Shannon Gilroy earned four goals and a game-high seven draw controls.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Richmond on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
