WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Behind
a strong pitching performance from senior RHP Jay McCarthy, the William and
Mary baseball team notched its 11th win of the season with a 13-5 win over
Quinnipiac Tuesday night at Plumeri Park.
The win improves W&M to 11-7 overall, while Quinnipiac drops to 1-7
on the season.
McCarthy (2-1) pitched five innings to earn his second
victory of the season. The Yorktown,
Va., native allowed just one earned run on three hits, while fanning five
Bobcat batters. Quinnipiac's Kevin
Castodio (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings. Junior relievers Brett Goodloe and John
Sheehan combined to work four scoreless innings of relief.
Senior left fielder Tadd Bower went 2-for-4 with three RBIs
to lead the Tribe offensively. Junior
lead-off man Kevin Nutter was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while sophomore
third baseman Ryan Lindemuth tallied three RBIs in his two-hit
performance. Junior center fielder Ryan
Brown's solid outing consisted of three runs scored to go along with a hit and an
RBI. Rounding out the Tribe's offensive
outburst was freshman right fielder Josh Smith, who went 3-for-4 with two runs
scored and an RBI.
Quinnipiac got on the scoreboard first with a run in the opening
frame. The opportunistic Bobcats scored
the night's first run when shortstop Scott Donaghue advanced home after a
W&M passed ball. In the bottom half
of the frame the Tribe responded with a run of its own and tied the contest up
at 1-1 after one inning of play. With
two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore designated hitter Bobby Klein drew a
base-on-balls, which plated Nutter.
After holding Quinnipiac scoreless in the next inning,
W&M gained control of the game with three runs in the second. A Nutter triple to right field platted Smith,
which gave the Tribe its first lead of the night, at 2-1. RBIs by Lindemuth and freshman Michael Katz
put across W&M's second and third runs of the inning, and pushed the Tribe
advantage to 4-1.
The College stretched its lead to 9-1 with five runs in the
bottom half of the third. With two outs
and the bases loaded, Brown drew a base-on-balls that put across sophomore
catcher Devin White. Lindemuth then
drove home Nutter and Smith with a two-out single through the middle of the
infield. Culminating the five-run frame
was Bower, who brought home Brown with a single to center field. With Bower
advancing to second on the throw to the plate, Brown came around to score all
the way from first as Quinnipiac unsuccessfully tried to cut down Bower as he
took second.
A resilient Quinnipiac squad fought its way back into the
contest with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings as it cut the
Tribe lead to 9-5.
The College put any notions of a Bobcat comeback to rest
with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
Bower drove home the inning's first two runs with a double to center
field and later scored the frames third run after a Quinnipiac wild pitch. The
fourth and final run of the frame was driven in by Smith, who laced a single
down the right field line to plate Katz, and after five innings of play,
W&M held a 13-5 lead.
The rest of the way, neither the Tribe nor the Bobcats
managed to score any runs. Needing only
three outs to record the victory, Sheehan tossed a strong ninth inning as the
Tribe preserved the 13-5 triumph.
The Tribe concludes its two-game series with Quinnipiac
tomorrow night at Plumeri Park. The
first pitch from Williamsburg is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can follow all of the action online at
