WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team fell in its series finale to Northeastern, 4-3, at
Plumeri Park on Sunday afternoon. With
the loss, the Tribe falls to 10-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while
Northeastern improves to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Junior centerfielder Ryan Brown went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
a run scored to lead the Tribe offensively, while sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Senior catcher Chris Forsten also drove in a run.
On the mound, junior LHP Matt Wainman (2-2) took the loss,
but the Woodbridge, Va., native allowed no earned runs in his 7.1 innings of
work, as all three of the runs he allowed were unearned. Northeastern starting
LHP Kevin Ferguson earned the win and improved his record to 2-0 by allowing
just two runs on three hits in 7.0 innings.
The Tribe raced out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half
of the first. After junior Kevin Nutter
reached second on a wild throw by the Huskies shortstop, he then advanced to
third on a sacrifice by Brown. Nutter the plated Brown with an RBI groundout to
first.
W&M pushed its advantage to 2-0 with a run in the
third. Junior shortstop Ryan Williams
got things started with a hard-hit single back at the pitcher. After Williams
stole second, Nutter singled through the right side to putter runners on the
corners before Brown drove in W&M's second run when he reached on a
fielder's choice.
Northeastern took the lead with three runs in the top half
of the fourth. All three Huskies runs
were scored with two outs.
NU extended the margin to 4-2 with a solo home run by first
baseman Rob Fonseca in the eighth.
W&M responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame
to narrow the gap to just one run. Senior catcher Chris Forsten drove in the
score with a fielder's choice that plated Brown.
W&M threatened in the bottom of the ninth when Nutter
hit a line drive down the left field line that looked like it might go for
extra bases, but NU left fielder Matt Miller made a diving catch to preserve
the victory.
The Tribe returns to action this Tuesday and Wednesday when
it plays host to Quinnipiac in a two-game mid-week series at Plumeri Park. The first pitch from Williamsburg on Tuesday
evening is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can
