WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Behind
senior RHP Matt Davenport's complete game performance, the William and Mary
baseball team edged Northeastern, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri
Park. The win improves W&M to 10-6
overall and 1-1 in CAA play, while the Huskies drop to 6-3 on the year and 1-1
in league action.
Davenport (3-0) tossed a complete game and allowed just two
earned runs on seven hits. The
Chesapeake native flashed his glove ability several times in the Saturday
afternoon affair as he recorded five fielding assists and struck out five
batters. Northeastern's Dylan Maki (1-2) took the loss, allowing three earned
runs in six innings of work.
At the plate, senior designated hitter Tadd Bower led the
Tribe attack with three hits and two RBIs.
Senior left fielder Stephen Arcure's strong outing consisted of two hits
and an RBI. Junior center fielder Ryan
Brown went 1-for-3 with two runs scored while freshman Michael Katz recorded an
RBI in the 4-3 victory.
In the top of the first, Northeastern got on the scoreboard
quickly with a pair of runs. With one
out and the bases loaded, NU's designated hitter Alex McKeon plated the Huskies
first two runs of the contest with a single to right field.
Not to be outdone, W&M responded with two runs of its
own in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score up at 2-2 after one inning
of play. With one out and juniors Kevin
Nutter and Ryan Brown on second and third, Bower's single through the right
side plated both juniors.
The Tribe took control of the contest with runs in the
second and third innings. After being
pelted by an errant pitch to lead off the second inning, senior catcher Chris
Forsten moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Arcure then executed a one-out RBI single
through the middle of the infield that plated Forsten. In the third, Katz brought home Brown with a
sacrifice fly to left field, and after three innings of play, W&M owned a
4-2 advantage.
Northeastern plated a run in the top of the fifth that cut
the College's lead down to one at 4-3.
Only needing one more out to get out of the frame, W&M committed a
throwing error that allowed NU's Aaron Barbosa to score the visitors third run
of the afternoon.
In a tight ballgame at 4-3, Davenport shutdown any
Northeastern rally as he retired the last nine batters in a row to preserve the
series tying 4-3 triumph.
The Tribe concludes its three-game series with Northeastern
tomorrow at Plumeri Park with the first pitch from Williamsburg scheduled for 1
p.m. Fans can follow the action online
