Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team opened the home
portion of its dual-match campaign with a 5-2 victory over BIG EAST foe
Georgetown on Friday night at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Sophomore
Jeltje Loomans highlighted the Tribe win with a three-set triumph over nationally-ranked Lauren Greco at the No. 1 singles position. The
Green and Gold swept the doubles and added singles wins from senior
Katie Kargl and sophomores
Maria Belaya and
Hope Johnson to outdistance the Hoyas. W&M won its first match of the 2012 season, while
Georgetown had its three-match winning streak snapped in falling to 3-2.
The Green and Gold opened the match by sweeping the doubles
to claim the initial point of the contest. The reigning CAA Doubles Team of the
Week, Loomans and Belaya, won its fourth straight match at the top pairs
position, downing Lauren Greco and Kelly Comolli, 8-3. Loomans and Belaya
improved to 11-5 overall on the year and 4-2 in dual-match competition. At the
No. 2 post, junior
Anik Cepeda and sophomore
Marlen Mesgarzadeh won their
second straight dual match and improved to 3-1 on the year with a tiebreaker
win, 8-7 (6), over Victoria Sekely and Tina Tehrani. Kargl and Johnson rounded
out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 triumph over Madeline Jaeger and Sophie
Panarese at the No. 3 slot.
In singles action, Loomans tallied her fourth win of the
season, but knocked off her first nationally ranked opponent of the year with a
come-from-behind win at the No. 1 position. The Tribe sophomore dropped the
opening set, 6-3, to No. 79-ranked Lauren Greco, before rallying to take the
second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). In the decisive third set, Loomans pulled out
a 6-4 triumph.
Belaya and Johnson both recorded resounding straight-sets
wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 posts. Belaya won for the third time in her last
four matches, making quick work of Tina Tehrani, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. It marked
her fourth win of the season. Johnson won for the second time in three matches
with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Kelly Comolli at the No. 3 position.
Kargl rounded out the Tribe victory with a comeback
three-set win at the No. 5 position. After dropping the first set to Madeline
Jaeger, 6-4, the Tribe senior bounced back to take the match with wins in the
second, 6-2, and third sets, 6-4. It marked Kargl's second straight win as she
evened her singles ledger at 8-8.
The Tribe wraps up its two-match home-opening weekend with a
Sunday tilt against the No. 51-ranked Maryland Terrapins. The match is slated
for a 1 p.m. start time at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
