Former William and Mary field hockey standout and assistant coach
Welsey Drew '10 will don the Red, White, and Blue for the first time next month as a member of the U.S. National Indoor Squad in Austria. Drew, who was named as a senior team finalist in the spring, will compete alongside 11 teammates at the 33rd RohrMax Cup in Vienna on January 4-6, taking on national teams from Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.
As a player for the Tribe from 2006-09, Drew was twice named first-team
All-CAA and first-team All-State, while also earning all-region
accolades as a senior. As a junior in 2008, she dished out 10 assists,
tied for the third-most ever in a single season at W&M, and added
five goals that year as well as W&M reached the CAA semifinals. In
total, Drew scored 13 goals and 19 assists, the latter total tying her
for third all-time in school history. She was also a standout in the
classroom, earned three CAA Commissioner's Awards before graduating in
2010 with degrees in psychology and kinesiology.
Drew was also a member of the Tribe coaching staff in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, the Tribe won six of its first seven games
including a final-minute, come-from-behind win over No. 20
Northeastern. Outside of coaching, Drew is also passionate about
helping with conservation efforts for the world's great apes. Over the past few summers, she has spent time volunteering at an orangutan sanctuary in
Indonesia, and led a fundraising effort that resulted in the Tribe field
hockey team sponsoring the care of two young male orangutans.
Drew is the first field hockey player to represent W&M on the U.S. Senior National Team since
Karen Thorne '84 during the 1980 season.
