Field Hockey Drops CAA Opener to Northeastern

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior Amelia Morgan scored her first collegiate goal in William & Mary field hockey's CAA opener. Unfortunately, Northeastern's Laine Ambrose answered with two goals of her own to lift the Huskies to a 3-1 victory on Friday afternoon at Busch Field.

After Northeastern scored its second goal of the contest midway through the second quarter, Morgan got W&M (1-8, 0-1 CAA) on the board via a penalty stroke.

The Tribe generated a penalty corner in the 24th minute and on the play, Morgan's initial shot from the top of the circle was saved by Northeastern goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge. The ball spilled over and was trapped under a Husky player resulting in the penalty stroke. Morgan lifted the chance from the spot over Loveridge to cut the deficit to 2-1 with just over six minutes left in the opening half.

The Huskies (5-4, 1-1 CAA) pushed the lead back to two on Ambrose's second goal of the afternoon in the 27th minute. Off a restart, Emilia Adragna fed the ball to Ambrose on the left side of the penalty area. The NU forward touched around a Tribe defender and scored inside the near post to give the visitor a 3-1 lead.

Neither team could find the back of the cage in the second half. It looked as though the Tribe had pulled one back with just over six minutes remaining in the match. Senior Emme Schwartz sent a pass from outside the area that caught the stick of junior Ellen Ford and trickled into the goal. The official waved off the goal and upheld the decision following a review.

Northeastern outshot the Tribe, 13-4, on the afternoon, and generated seven corners to the Tribe's two. Junior goalkeeper Alexandra de Jesus finished the afternoon with eight saves in goal for W&M.

Emmy Stubbs scored the game's first goal just 2:48 into the contest and the Huskies led 1-0 after the first quarter. Ambrose first goal of the afternoon came in the 23rd minute as she touched around a rushing de Jesus and scored into the right side of the cage.

The Tribe continues its homestand when it welcomes Davidson to Busch Field on Sunday, Oct. 5, at noon.
