TOWSON, Md. - William & Mary field hockey dropped a 2-0 decision on the road at Towson on Friday afternoon.
Â
Despite outshooting the Tigers, 6-3, and generating six penalty corners to zero for the home team in the second half, the Tribe could not overcome a two-goal halftime deficit.
Â
Anouk Westerink scored twice in the opening 16 minutes to give Towson (6-7, 2-0 CAA) a 2-0 lead. Her first tally came off a rebound in the first quarter, before her second marker was off a penalty corner from the right side of the circle just 41 seconds into the second quarter.
Â
W&M's best chance off the first half came just over four minutes into the second frame. Off a penalty corner, senior
Amelia Morgan's shot from the top of the circle was saved by Towson's Tessa Scheenstra.
Â
The Tribe (1-10, 0-2 CAA) pressure in the second half started early. W&M nearly found its first goal just under four minutes into the third frame. Off W&M's second penalty corner, senior
Emme Schwartz had her shot from the top of the circle hit the left post. On the ensuing Green and Gold penalty corner, junior
Josie Mae Gruendel's shot at the near post was kick away by Scheenstra.
Â
It appeared as though the Tribe pulled one back in the 48th minute. Off a penalty corner, Morgan's shot from the top of the circle was redirected in by senior
Erin Griffin. The officials conferred and waived off the Tribe's tally to keep the game at 2-0.
Â
W&M generated two more penalty corners and had a trio of shots, including two from Schwartz, but could not find the scoring column.
Â
For the game, Towson outshot W&M, 15-8, while the Tribe had a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus made eight saves in goal, and Schwartz and Gruendel topped the Tribe with three shots apiece.
Â
The Tribe returns to action when it hosts No. 13 Monmouth on Friday, Oct. 17. The match carries a 3:30 p.m. start time and will be broadcast on FloCollege.
