RICHMOND, Va. - After leading the Tribe to a season-opening win over
Hampton, William and Mary sophomore men's basketball player
Marcus Thornton was
named the Colonial Athletic Association co-Player of the Week, the league
office announced on Monday afternoon. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native led all
scorers with 24 points in the Tribe's season-opening 69-51 win over Hampton on
Nov. 9.
It marks the first CAA Player of the Week award for the
W&M program since the 2009-10 season and the third weekly league award for
Thornton after he was named the CAA Rookie of the Week twice during his
freshman season. The last Tribe player to win CAA Player of the Week honor was
Quinn McDowell on Dec. 28, 2009. Thornton shared the weekly accolades with
George Mason's Bryon Allen, who helped the Patriots to a 63-59 win over
Virginia.
Against the Pirates, Thornton was 7-of-11 from the field,
including a career-best 6-of-9 from 3-point range. The six treys tied for the
ninth-most in a single game in W&M history. The Preseason All-CAA selection
hit five of his six treys in the second half against Hampton and scored 11
points as part of a 23-4 second-half run that broke open the game. Thornton
added two assists and a career-high two blocked shots.
Thornton and the Tribe will look for its first 2-0 start to a season since 2004-05 when they travel to Liberty tonight at 7 p.m. The
game will be televised on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and will also
be available over the Internet on
ESPN3.
Tribe fans can follow the action on the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley,
Charlie Woollum and Bill McDonald on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM in Williamsburg
is the flagship station of the Tribe Radio Network and the broadcast can also
be heard on TribeAthletics.com.
