WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team fell to James Madison 50-40,
Sunday afternoon in Kaplan Arena.
The setback drops William and Mary to an
overall record of 8-10 and a CAA ledger of 1-6.
With the win, James Madison improves to 14-4 on the season and 5-2 in
league action.
Junior forward Jaclyn McKenna led the Tribe by notching her
third career double-double, 11 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Fellow
classmate Emily Correal chipped in ten points, while corralling seven
boards. The College finished the game
outrebounding one of the CAA's best rebounding teams in JMU, 55-48.
In the opening minutes of the first half the Green and Gold
established their defensive presence by forcing three-straight Madison turnovers. Capitalizing off the Duke mistakes, the Tribe
raced out to an early 8-2 advantage. Orchestrating
the Tribe's effort was Correal, who tallied four points in the run.
A Janine Aldridge catch and fire 3-pointer capped off a 9-2
run by the College. During that stretch
senior Taysha Pye poured in four of her total eight points. James Madison answered when Nikki Newman
connected from downtown, trimming the Tribe lead to only three, 17-14.
With 1:25 left in the opening frame another 9-2 Tribe run
culminated in an Aldridge steal. The Massapequa, N.Y. native then went
coast-to-coast for the fast break layup, pushing the Tribe stranglehold to
26-16. The defensive-minded first-half
ended with William and Mary holding a 26-16 lead.
Stifling defense highlighted one of the Tribe's best
halves of the year. William and Mary
held JMU to a season-low 16 first half points.
The Green and Gold limited the Dukes to shoot only 21.2 percent from the
floor (7-of-33). From long distance the
College forced JMU to shoot an abysmal 1-of-12 (8.3 percent). At intermission, the College held the upper
hand in points in the paint, points off turnovers, fast break points, bench
points, and rebounding.
The Tribe's 10-point lead was quickly trimmed to four, 28-24,
when JMU's Kiara Francisco connected on a jump shot in the opening minutes of
the second-half. However, McKenna's
3-pointer from the top of the arc with 10:43 remaining pushed the William and
Mary lead back to double digits, 38-28.
Turning up the pressure, James Madison answered with a 20-0
run, seizing control of the game. Unable
to complete the comeback, the College fell to James Madison, 50-40.
The College will return to action Thursday
January 26 as it plays host to in-state CAA rival Old Dominion. Tip-off from Kaplan Arena is scheduled for 7
p.m.
