Boston, Mass. - The William and Mary men's basketball team
fell on the road at Northeastern on Saturday afternoon. The Tribe led for the
majority of the opening half, but the Huskies used a run spanning the end of
the first half and the beginning of the second half to pull out the victory.
W&M fell to 4-14 overall and 2-4 in CAA play, while NU won for the fifth
time in its last six games to improve to 8-8 on the year and 4-2 in league
action.
Senior forward
Quinn McDowell led the Green and Gold with 13
points, while knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. Sophomore guard
Brandon Britt
finished with 10 points for the Tribe, while fellow classmate
Tim Rusthoven had
nine points and a career-high three blocked shots.
The Tribe led 27-19 following a 3-pointer from McDowell with
three minutes remaining in the opening half, before Northeastern embarked on
its game-changing run. The Huskies scored on its final four possessions of the
opening half to close the frame on an 8-0 run. Joel Smith pulled NU even at 27
on a free throw line jumper off an offensive rebound at the halftime horn.
Northeastern continued its spurt to start the second half,
scoring 12 of the opening 15 minutes of the stanza. A Jonathan Lee 3-pointer
from the right corner at the 16:09, extended the Husky lead to 39-30. In total,
NU was perfect shooting the ball through the opening 8:30 of the second half.
The Huskies hit their first seven attempts from the field, including four
3-pointers, and each of their first six free throws to push the advantage to
49-36 with 11:29 remaining.
The Tribe held NU scoreless for the four minutes, but could
only close the deficit to seven points, 49-42, following a pair of free throws
from sophomore
Julian Boatner with 8:30 left. The Husky lead again reached
double digits following a Quincy Ford jumper, and the Tribe could get no closer
than eight the rest of the way.
W&M shot 36.4 percent (16-of-44) from the floor, 35.3
percent (6-of-17) from 3-pointers range and 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free
throw line. Northeastern finished the contest at 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the
floor, but connected on 53.3 percent from the field in the decisive second
half. The Huskies also finished 21-of-26 from the free throw line (80.8), including
17-of-21 (81 percent) in the second half.
With the game tied at five in the early going, the Tribe
used a 9-2 run to gain the advantage in the opening half. Boatner knocked down
a triple, before Brown drove the left side of the baseline and finished at the
rim, while drawing the foul. After he completed the conventional 3-point play,
Britt knocked down his first 3-pointer of the opening half to extend the Green
and Gold lead to 14-7 with 12:15 left in the opening half.
The lead reached as many as nine, 22-13, following a 3-point
play in the post from Rusthoven at the 6:46 mark. Six straight NU point closed
the gap to 22-19, before the College pushed it back to eight following McDowell's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:09 remaining in the opening
half. The Huskies, though, pulled even at the halftime horn thanks to an
8-point spurt.
Smith led Northeastern with 14 points, while Ford added his
first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lee rounded out the
double-digit scorers for NU with 12 points to go along with four assists.
The Tribe will wrap up its three-game road trip at VCU on Thursday,
Jan. 19, in a nationally televised contest. The game, which is slated for an 8
