Towson, Md. - The William and Mary men's basketball team
used a 16-point second-half run and shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the final
20 minutes to pick up a CAA road win at Towson, 66-49, on Wednesday night.
Senior forward
Quinn McDowell scored a season-high 26 points to lead the way
for the Green and Gold. W&M improved to 4-13 on the year and 2-3 in CAA
play with the road win, while Towson dropped to 0-17 and 0-5 in league action.
McDowell finished with 17 of his game-high 26 points in the
second half and closed the night shooting 9-of-13 from the floor, 3-of-5 from
3-point range and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard
Julian Boatner knocked down four 3-pointers on the night to finish with 12
points, while fellow classmate
Brandon Britt chipped in nine points. Sophomore
forward
Tim Rusthoven turned in a nice stat line with eight points, eight
rebounds and a career-best five assists. Senior guard
Kendrix Brown pulled down
double-digit rebounds for the third time in the last five games, corralling a game-high 10 boards to go along with five points and three assists compared to zero
turnovers.
W&M led by as many as seven in the early part of the
second half, before the Towson used an 8-2 run sparked by Marcus Damas to pull
even. A Damas steal and fast-break jumper at the 11:09 mark knotted the contest
at 42. W&M answered on its next possession as McDowell canned a triple to
ignite a 16-0 Tribe run. After Boatner canned back-to-back 3-pointers,
McDowell's fast-break lay-up attempt drew a goaltending call and gave the
College a 53-42 lead, forcing a Towson timeout with 7:47 remaining.
McDowell drove the lane, scored and drew the foul at the
4:36 mark to extend the Tribe cushion. He added the free throw for the conventional 3-point play, before Boatner
found Rusthoven on a nice cut the hoop a minute later to push the advantage to
58-42. During the spurt, the College held Towson scoreless for nearly eight
minutes to taking the double-digit lead. The Green and Gold advantage reached as many as 19
points, 66-47, following four straight free throws from McDowell as W&M notched its second road victory of the season.
W&M shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the floor for the second
time this season and went 11-of-14 (78.6) from the free throw line. The Tribe
canned seven 3-pointers, including a 5-of-10 clip from deep in the second half.
The Green and Golf finished with 12 assists compared to just nine turnovers
against the Tigers. W&M limited Towson to 38.5 percent (20-of-52) shooting
from the field and only 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from 3-point range. Damas led
Towson with 14 points, all of which came in the second half, while Robert
Nwankwo finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
W&M got off to a slow start as the Tigers scored the
opening six points of the contest before the Green and Gold got on track.
Trailing 14-8, the Tribe scored eight straight points to take its first lead.
Rusthoven capped the spurt with a pair of bucket, including a nice post move,
sweeping across the lane for a lay-up to put the Green and Gold on top, 16-14, at
the 7:19 mark.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Towson's Alex Giergen and Deyon
Cook gave the Tigers a 24-20 advantage with 1:46 remaining in the first half, but it was all
Tribe into the locker room. Boatner knocked down a 3-pointer from deep on the
right wing to start an eight-point run, before freshman forward
Tom Schalk
knocked down a pair of free throws after being fouled on a rebound. Britt
capped the run with a driving hoop and the harm. His free throw to complete the
3-point play sent the College to the locker room with a 28-24 advantage.
