The William and Mary field hockey team continued its winning ways on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over UC Davis in a neutral-site match-up in Ohio. The Tribe is now 5-1 on the year, its best start since a similar 5-1 mark in 2006, while the Aggies fell to 2-4 overall.
Redshirt-junior
Leah Zamesnik (Norfolk, Va.) put the Tribe ahead 1-0 in the 23rd minute, dribbling in to the top of shotting circle and blasting a shot by the goalkeeper. It was Zamesnik's team-leading fourth goal of the season, and the fourth game-winning goal of her career.
The Aggies stayed defensive for most of the rest of the game, turtling in front of the game as the Tribe built an astonishing 25-9 advantage in shots, but finally the College was able to break through with two more goals. In the 63rd minute, sophomore
Chaney Manganello (Richmond, Va.) juked the defense in the middle of the circle and turned to blast her first career goal into the back of the net. With two minutes left in the game and UC Davis pulling their goalkeep, junior
Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, Va.) took a shot at the empty net that was saved by a defender. Sophomore
Taylor Hodge (Louisville, Ky.) grabbed the rebound and put the ball into the boards, giving the Tribe a 3-0 lead. The Aggies would score on a rebounded save of their own in the final minute, but W&M was comfortably ahead and claimed the win.
William and Mary returns to Williamsburg to start conference play next weekend, hosting Northeastern at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23.
