W&M's Celine Alasomuka, Manon Murray Earn CAA Volleyball Weekly Honors

The William and Mary volleyball team's great weekend in Ohio last weekend produced a pair of weekly honors from the Colonial Athletic Association on Monday, the first two awards of the season for W&M.  Sophomore libero Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman outside Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Alasomuka averaged an impressive 6.25 digs per set at the Kent State Invitational, helping the Tribe claim second in the four-team event.  Her weekend started Friday afternoon, when the sophomore piled up 29 digs in a 3-0 win over Robert Morris and broke the W&M school record for a three-set match.  The previous mark had been 25, set originally in 1989 by Jennifer Torns '92, and matched by Kristin Gundersen '03 in 1999 and Kathleen Hawley '07 in 2003.  Alasomuka had 25 more in a 3-2 loss to IUPUI, and finished her weekend with 21 in a 3-1 win over Kent State.  Her efforts this weekend raised Alasomuka's season average by nearly three-quarters of a dig, and she now ranks second in the CAA at 4.97 digs per set.

Murray has had a strong start to her collegiate career, and was finally recognized after averaging 4.91 kills and 3.45 digs per set.  In the win over Robert Morris, she didn't even enter the match until the second set, and still collected 17 kills while hitting .500 to lead the way to victory.  Murray added a double-double of 16 kills and 14 digs against IUPUI, and finished out the weekend with 21 kills and 15 digs against Kent State.  She is currently the top-rated freshman in the CAA in both kills (3.36, 6th) and points per set (3.71, 8th).

William and Mary heads to Philadelphia this weekend for its final in-season tournament, the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational.  The Tribe will face UMBC on Friday, and Rhode Island and Penn on Saturday.
