Tribe Women's Track Competes Saturday at Swarthmore, ECAC Championships

The William and Mary women's track and field team brought its weekend to a close Saturday evening running at two meets, as freshman Kathleen Lautzenheiser (Midlothian, Va.) ran the 1,500m prelims at the ECAC Championships a trio of 800m runners cruised to a pair of career-best times at the Swarthmore Last Chance meet.

In Princeton for the ECAC Championships, Lautzenheiser brought her first collegiate season to an end after running 4:31.35 for 1,500m, and placing 17th in the preliminary heats.  Her year has included a freshman record at 5,000m and a third-place finish at 1,500m last weekend at the CAA Championships, and could continue this June at the USAT&F Junior Championships.  The national meet serves as the selection event for several international events later this summer, including the Pan-American Junior Games and World University Games.  Lautzenheiser is a qualifier at both 1,500m (4:29.10) and 5,000m (16:43.58).

Saturday night at the Swarthmore Last Chance meet, sophomore Katie Buenaga (Greenville, Del.) made the most of her abbreviated season by smashing her previous-best at 800m with a 2:16.77 showing.  The time was more than 3.8 seconds faster than she had run the half-mile ever before.  Also in the same race, grad student Keely Murphy (Owings, Md.) ran a seasons-best 2:17.70, and freshman Christina Lee (Sterling, Va.) ran a personal-best 2:20.02.

William and Mary will next await word on which athletes will be invited to the NCAA Championships, beginning May 26-28.  The top 48 athletes in each event in the East region will compete at Indiana University that weekend, aiming for one of 12 qualifying spots for the National Finals at Drake University, June 8-11.  Freshman Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.) is currently 29th in the 5,000m run, and senior Betsy Graney (Harper Woods, Mich.) is 55th in the 3,000m steeplechase.
