Boston, Mass. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team won its series with the Northeastern
Huskies this weekend, clinching the three-game set with a 5-4 victory over NU
on Sunday afternoon. With the victory,
the Tribe improves its record to 23-23 on the season and to 13-11 in CAA
play. With the loss, the Huskies fall to
13-27 on the year and to 8-12 in conference action.
The series win over the Huskies was the first for the Tribe
at Northeastern in school history.
Previously, the Tribe was 1-5 all-time in Boston. The CAA series win was also the Tribe's sixth
in its eight conference weekends so far this season.
Sophomore
Ryan Williams
led the Tribe's offense on the day,
going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Freshman
Ryan Lindemuth
capped his great weekend with a solo home run,
while classmate
Devin White
had a RBI double.
Making his first weekend start of the season, sophomore Matt Wainman
had a great day on the mound.
Wainman threw six innings, allowing just one run on three hits. The sophomore also struck out eight batters
while walking just one. Classmate John Farrell pitched a perfect seventh inning, while Brett Koehler
got the final six
outs for the Tribe.
For the second-straight game, the Tribe took an early lead
with runs in the first inning against the Huskies. With two outs, runners were on second and
third for Williams. The sophomore came
through with a clutch, two-out hit, singling through the left side. Williams plated both runners for a pair of
RBIs and also advanced to second on the throw to home to get in to scoring
position. His heads up play paid off for
the College, as White doubled down the left-field line on an 0-2 pitch to score
Williams. After one inning, the Tribe
had a 3-0 lead over the Huskies.
After the Huskies scored a run in the second on a Jon Leroux
solo homer, the College would answer in the top of the sixth with a long ball
of their own. Leading off the inning,
Lindemuth took a a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left field for his second homer
of the season, pushing the Tribe's lead back to three runs, 4-1.
In the top of the eighth, W&M again used a clutch,
two-out hit to score what turned out to be the game's winning run. After an intentional walk to junior Tadd
Bower, the Tribe had runners on first and second with two outs for
Williams. Just like he did in the first,
Williams came through, hitting a single to left field, scoring senior Derrick
Osteen to give the Tribe a 5-1 lead headed to the bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the frame, Northeastern would score three
times with the most damaging hit coming on a two-out, two-RBI single off the
bat of Oliver Hart. With the score 5-4
in favor of the Tribe, the game headed to the ninth.
In the top of the frame, the Tribe was not able to score any
insurance runs and the Huskies came to bat chasing just one run. Northeastern never got a shot to get the
winning run to the plate, as Koehler worked a perfect ninth to secure the game
and the series for the Tribe.
On the weekend, the Tribe was led offensively by sophomore
Ryan Brown
and Lindemuth. Brown was
terrific, going 6-for-9 (.667) with four runs scored and four stolen
bases. Lindemuth was equally fantastic
for the College, going 7-for-13 (.538) with three doubles, two home runs, five
runs scored and seven RBIs. Also,
Williams drove in four runs on the weekend, while Bower had three RBIs for the
Tribe.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will have six days
off for finals before the College will host the Longwood Lancers to Plumeri
Park in Williamsburg for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 8. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1
p.m. with game two starting approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of
the first.
