- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team used a five-run fourth inning to
come from behind and defeat the visiting Hofstra Pride on Sunday afternoon,
10-3. With the victory, the Tribe
improves its record to 16-15 on the season and to 9-6 in CAA play, while the
Pride falls to 5-17 on the season and to 5-7 in conference action.
The Tribe used a total team effort at the plate to defeat
the Pride on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg. Eight different players had hits for William
and Mary while seven players had a RBI and seven more had at least one run
scored.
Senior Jonathan Slattery
was 2-for-4 on the day with a
team-high three RBIs, while sophomore Ryan Williams
drove in a pair. Senior Derrick Osteen
was 3-for-5 with a RBI
and two runs scored, while freshman Ryan Lindemuth
had two hits, three runs
scored, and one RBI. Also driving in
runs for the College were juniors Stephen Arcure
and Tadd Bower
, as well as freshman
Devin White
.
Out of the bullpen, junior Jay McCarthy
pitched 1.1 solid
innings to earn his first victory of the season. Sophomore Brett Koehler
continued his strong
year, pitching the final four innings to earn his team-leading fifth save of
the season. Koehler allowed just three
hits and struck out five while not issuing a walk.
After the Pride took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the
first, the Tribe tied the game in the bottom of the frame. After back-to-back singles from Lindemuth and
Osteen, Slattery moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice
bunt. White stepped to the plate for the
Tribe next and blasted a deep fly ball to center, scoring Lindemuth from third
on the sacrifice fly. White's ninth RBI
of the season tied the game at 1-1 after the first inning.
The game wasn't tied for long, as the Pride scored one run
in both the second and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead over the Green and
Gold heading in to the bottom of the fourth.
With one down in the frame, men were on first and second for
Lindemuth, who singled sharply up the middle to plate sophomore Derek Lowe
from
second base. Next up was Osteen, who
slapped a double to left field, scoring one run and tying the game at 3-3.
With runners on first and second, Slattery gave the Tribe
its first lead of the game, blasting a double over the Pride's center fielder,
clearing the bases and scoring a pair of runs.
Arcure capped the five-run inning for the College with a RBI single up
the middle, giving the Tribe a 6-3 lead over Hofstra after four complete
innings.
With the score still 6-3 in favor of the Tribe, the College
added some insurance runs to its advantage in the bottom of the eighth. In the frame, Slattery and Bower had RBI
singles for the Green and Gold, while Williams cracked a two-run double to give
W&M a 10-3 they would not surrender, taking the game and the series from
the Pride.
After dropping its first CAA series of the season against
James Madison, the Tribe has reeled off four-straight conference series
wins. The four-straight CAA series wins
are the first for the Tribe since it won four straight during the 2003 season.
This weekend, numerous Tribe batters had great weekends for
the College, but none better than Brown, who hit 5-for-7 (.714) with two
doubles, a RBI, and three runs scored.
Slattery went 5-for-11 (.455) against the Pride with six RBIs, while
both Lindemuth and Williams drove in four runs.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will next be in
action on Wednesday, April 6, when the College will travel to face the
University of Richmond Spiders. First
pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
