Boston, Mass. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team dropped the first game of its three-game
set with the Northeastern Huskies in Boston on Friday afternoon, 5-3. With the loss, the College falls to 21-23 on
the season and to 11-11 in CAA play.
With the victory, the Huskies improve to 13-25 and to 8-11 in conference
action.
Freshman Ryan Lindemuth
continued his hot-hitting of late,
going 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and a run scored to pace the Tribe. Junior Tadd Bower
also hit a home run, going
2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base, while junior Stephen Arcure
had a pair of
hits. Sophomore Ryan Brown
went 2-for-3
on the afternoon with a run scored and his team-leading 10th
stolen
base of the season.
After a shaky first inning, junior starter Jay McCarthy
settled in for the Tribe. On the day,
McCarthy pitched seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, while striking
out three and walking none. McCarthy
allowed four runs on four hits in the first inning, but would surrender just
one run on three hits over the course of the next six frames.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the
College, scoring four runs, three earned, in the bottom of the first
inning. Doing the most damage in the
frame was John Puttress who hit a two-run triple.
After a scoreless second for both teams, the College cut the
lead in half in the top of the third.
Leading off the inning was Brown, who reached base after getting hit by
a pitch for the ninth time this season.
Lindemuth followed, blasting his first collegiate home run over the
fence in left-center field. Lindemuth's
two-run shot cut the Northeastern lead to 4-2 after three complete.
After Northeastern scored a run in the bottom of the fourth
to push its lead back to 5-2, the Tribe answered with another homer in the top
of the sixth. Leading off the frame,
Bower hit a solo blast to right-center field for his fifth home run of the
season. Bower's 17th
career
homer made the Huskies' lead 5-3 after six innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Tribe had a shot to cut in to
the lead but was unable to come through with a clutch hit. With Bower on base after a single, Arcure
drew the game's first walk to put runners on first and second with just one out. With the tying run on first, sophomore
Jackson Shaver
lined out to center field and junior Chris Forsten
struck out to
end the Tribe's threat.
After sophomore John Farrell
pitched a scoreless bottom of
the eighth for the College, the score remained 5-3 headed to the top of the
ninth. Sophomore Derek Lowe
led off the
inning with a single, but was caught stealing second for the frame's first
out. Brown followed, reaching on an
infield single to the NU third baseman.
W&M rally would stall there, however, as the Green and Gold's next
two batters flew out to end the game.
The William and Mary Tribe will continue its three-game
series with the Northeastern Huskies on Saturday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
