Williamsburg, Va. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team fell to the George Washington Colonials on
Wednesday night, 4-3, at Plumeri Park.
With the loss, the Tribe falls to 21-22 on the season while the Colonials
improve to 11-30 on the year. The teams
split the season series, with each team winning on the road.
Freshman Ryan Lindemuth
paced the College's offense on the
night, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a RBI, and a run scored. Seniors Derrick Osteen
and Jonathan Slattery
each had a hit and a RBI, while junior Tadd Bower
had a hit and stole two
bases.
Out of the bullpen, the sophomore trio of Matt Wainman
, John
Farrell, and Brett Koehler
combined to pitch 3.2 innings, striking out five,
walking one, and surrendering just one hit.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Colonials
jumped on the scoreboard first, pushing across three runs in the top of the
third to claim an early lead over the Tribe.
In the bottom of the fifth, the College strung together
five-consecutive hits to tie the contest after five complete innings. Sophomore Ryan Brown
started the rally with a
single to center field. Lindemuth came
to the plate next, and with Brown on the move, doubled to deep right-center
field to score Brown from first.
With one run in, Osteen promptly plated Lindemuth with a
double of his own, cutting the Colonial lead to just one. After an infield single from Bower, runners
were on first and second for Slattery.
On a 0-1 offering, Slattery singled sharply through the left side of the
infield, scoring Osteen from second and tying the game at 3-3.
The game wasn't tied for long, however, as George Washington
scored its fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stephen
Oswald in the top of the sixth inning to take a one-run lead over the
Tribe. Despite having chances, the Tribe
was unable to overcome the deficit and fell to GW, 4-3.
It was a game of missed opportunities for William and Mary
Wednesday night. The Tribe left 11 runners
on base for the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and
eighth innings. Of the Tribe's 11
runners left on, eight were in scoring position.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will head north to
Boston, Massachusetts this weekend to play the Northeastern Huskies in a
three-game, CAA series. The three-game
set gets underway on Friday, April 29 at 3 p.m.
