Norfolk, Va. -
The William and Mary women's tennis team moved on to the
Colonial Athletic Association Championship match for the second straight season
with a 4-0 win over No. 4-seeded and No. 74-ranked UNC Wilmington on Saturday
afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Green and Gold took the
doubles point before senior
Lauren Sabacinski
, sophomore
Anik Cepeda
and
freshman
Jeltje Loomans
cemented the team triumph with singles victories. The
Tribe won its sixth straight match in improving to 15-8 on the season, while
UNCW fell to 22-5.
The Tribe used the same doubles formula as the quarterfinal
victory over Drexel, claiming wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 posts. Junior Katie Kargl
and sophomore Marlen Mesgarzadeh
gave the College the early lead with
their fourth straight win, downing Christina Lee
and Lindsey Leblang, 8-3, at
the No. 2 position. The Second-Team All-CAA Tribe pair improved to 7-5 on the
year.
Trailing 5-2 at the No. 3 spot, Loomans and Sabacinski
rallied with six straight games to clinch the initial point of the match for
the College in downing Kelly Cameron and Chelsea Kahle, 8-5. The W&M pair continued its
remarkable run, winning for the 10th straight time in improving to
11-1 on the year.
Sabacinski carried the momentum over into her singles
affair, steamrolling Kahle at the No. 5 singles position to increase the Tribe
lead to 2-0. The Tribe senior dropped only one game over her two sets on the
way to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Sabacinski improved to 7-3 on the year and 3-1 at
the No. 5 spot as she won for the fifth time in her last six match, including
each of the last three. It marked her 70th career singles win.
Cepeda maintained her stellar form, winning for the 10th time in her last 11 matches. After taking the first set, 6-2, the Tribe
sophomore trailed by a break at 5-4 against Cameron. Cepeda won the final three
games of the match to notch her sixth straight victory. She equaled her
win-total from a season ago, improving to 25-13 on the year with her 50th career singles victory.
At the No. 3 post, Loomans put the cap on the Green and Gold
victory with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Angela Sekely. The Tribe rookie won for
the sixth time in her last eight matches to record her 10th win
overall and fifth at the No. 3 slot.
The Tribe advances to Sunday's CAA Championship against No.
3-seeded and No. 65-ranked Georgia State. The match is slated for a 10 a.m.
start at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk. The Panthers upset No.
2-seeded and No. 35-ranked VCU, 4-2, in the other semifinal.
