Williamsburg, Va.
- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team got back to winning in a big way on
Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Liberty Flames, 11-5, at Plumeri
Park. With the win, the Tribe's record
improves to 19-20 overall while the Flames fall to 20-17 on the year.
Leading the way on an impressive night for the Tribe's
offense was freshman
Devin White
, who had a career-high three hits and scored a
pair of runs. Sophomore
Derek Lowe
also
had three hits and scored twice, while senior
Derrick Osteen
went 1-for-3 with
three RBIs and two runs scored. Junior
Tadd Bower
and sophomore
Ryan Brown
each had two hits and a RBI for the Tribe,
while sophomore
Ryan Williams
had a two-run single. Also tallying RBIs on the night were senior
Jonathan Slattery
and junior
Stephen Arcure
.
Sophomore
Matt Wainman
improved his record on the season to
3-2, going five strong innings. Wainman
struck out a pair while surrendering two runs on the evening. Senior
Reid Killen
threw 1.1 perfect innings
out of bullpen, while junior
Matt Davenport
struck out one in his 0.2 innings
of work.
The Flames came out on fire Tuesday night, collecting hits
in their first three at-bats and pushing across two runs to take an early, 2-0
lead over the College.
After going scoreless in the first two innings, the Tribe
finally got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to some clutch,
two-out hitting. With two out in the
frame, Osteen started the rally by drawing a walk. After a single from Bower and a walk to
Slattery, the bases were loaded for Arcure.
The junior had a great at-bat and after falling behind in the count he
was able to draw a walk, plating Bower from third.
With the bases still full, Williams came to the plate and
also fell behind in the count. Like
Arcure, Williams was able to come through, singling to center field, driving in
a pair of runners to give the College a 3-2 lead over the Flames after three
complete.
In the bottom of the
sixth, the Tribe added to its lead in a big way over the Flames. With one down, White singled through the
middle and Lowe drew a walk to put runners on first and second
for Brown. On a 2-1 pitch, Brown hit a
single to center field, scoring White from second to make the lead, 4-2. After a hit-by-pitch to freshman Ryan Lindemuth
, the bases were loaded for Osteen, who earned a painful RBI after
getting hit by a pitch himself, making the score 5-3 in favor of the
College.
Bower stepped to the plate next for the Tribe and with the
bases still loaded he delivered with a run-scoring single to left-center
field. Up came Slattery, who grounded
sharply to the pitcher. The Liberty
hurler turned to start the double play at second base but his throw sailed on
him, going in to center field. On the
fielder's choice from Slattery, two runs would come across to give W&M an
8-2 lead after the five-run outburst.
The offense kept
rolling in the seventh for the Tribe as it continued to pad its lead over the
Flames. After back-to-back singles from
White and Lowe and a walk to Lindemuth, the bases were once again loaded, this
time for Osteen. The senior wasted
little time, blasting the first pitch he saw down the left-field line for a
two-run double. The College added
another in the frame when Lindemuth scored on a wild pitch, making the score
11-2 for William and Mary after seven innings.
The Flames scored a pair of runs in the eighth and added
another in the ninth, but it would not be enough, as the College would sweep
the season series, beating Liberty, 11-5.
In the two games against Liberty this season, the Tribe's
offense tallied 21 runs and hit .367 with four doubles and 19 RBIs. After going for a season-high 17 hits in the
first meeting, the College collected 12 more in the victory on Tuesday night.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will continue its
five-game homestand this weekend when it host CAA-rival VCU in a three-game
conference series. The three-game set
gets underway on Friday, April 22, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at
Plumeri Park.
