- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team dropped a hard-fought game at UNC
Wilmington on Sunday afternoon, 7-4.
With the loss, the Tribe falls to 18-20 on the season overall and to 9-9
in CAA play. The Seahawks improve to
21-14 on the year and to 10-5 in conference action.
Junior Tadd Bower
and freshman Ryan Lindemuth
each had three
hits on the afternoon to lead the Tribe's offense, while junior Stephen Arcure
had a pair of knocks. Driving in runs
for the College were senior Derrick Osteen
, junior Chris Forsten
, and sophomore
Kevin Nutter
.
Out of the bullpen, sophomore Brett Koehler
had a nice
performance for the College, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out two
and surrendering just two hits.
For the first time in the series, the Tribe would be the
team to score first on Sunday. After
threatening in the first inning, the College broke through with three runs in
the second.
Leading off the frame, both Lindemuth and Arcure singled to
left field to put runners on first and second.
One batter later with Nutter at the plate, the Tribe put on a double
steal. Trying to get the lead runner at
third, the throw from the UNCW catcher went in to left field, allowing
Lindemuth to score on the error and Arcure to move to third. Two pitches later, Nutter flied out to deep
center field, scoring Arcure from third on the sacrifice fly.
With the score 2-0 in favor of the Tribe, sophomore Ryan
Brown drew his second walk of the game to get on base for Osteen. After Brown stole second, Osteen singled
sharply to center, scoring a hustling Brown, giving the College a 3-0 lead over
the Seahawks.
The Seahawks used home runs in both the third and fifth
innings to take the lead from the Tribe.
In the third, UNCW's Andrew Cain hit a three-run homer tie the game and
then in the fifth Hunter Ridge hit a solo shot to give the Seahawks the
lead. Wilmington added another run in
the frame and led the College, 5-3, after five full innings.
In the top of the sixth the Tribe cut the lead in half,
pushing across one run. After a walk, a
hit from Lindemuth, and another walk, the bases were loaded for Forsten. Forsten delivered for the Tribe, hitting a
sacrifice fly to center field, plating senior Jonathan Slattery
. Despite having the bases loaded with no outs,
the College was only able to score once, making the UNCW lead, 5-4.
In the eighth and ninth innings, the College was unable to
mount a rally and would fall to UNC Wilmington, 7-4. It was a game of missed opportunities for the
Tribe, as it left 11 runners on base.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will return home to
Williamsburg to host Liberty University on Tuesday, April 19. First pitch at Plumeri Park is scheduled for
7 p.m.
