Williamsburg, Va. -
The No. 49 William and Mary women's tennis team celebrated
Senior Night by putting the wraps on the No. 1 seed for the Colonial Athletic
Association Championship with a 4-2 victory over league foe Old Dominion on
Friday night at the Millie West
Tennis Facility. W&M easily claimed the
doubles point before singles wins from sophomores Marlen Mesgarzadeh
and Anik Cepeda
as well as the clincher from freshman Marivick Mamiit
moved the Green
and Gold past the Monarchs for its sixth win in the last seven matches. The
College improved to 13-8 overall and a perfect 2-0 in CAA play, while ODU
dropped to 10-10 on the year and 3-2 in league action.
During the match, W&M celebrated the career of its lone
senior, Lauren Sabacinski
. Sabacinski did her part in doubles action helping
the College claim the initial point of the match. Freshman Jeltje Loomans
teamed with Sabacinski, and the Tribe twosome continued their dominating play
with an 8-3 win over Margarita Belyakova and Arina Alilueva at the No. 3 post. It marked their eighth straight victory as
Sabacinski and Loomans improved to an impressive 9-1 on the season. Sabacinski won her 80th career doubles matches with the victory over the Monarchs.
The Tribe jumped out to the early lead in doubles as the No. 33-ranked pair of Cepeda and freshman Hope Johnson
downed Joanna Dobrowolska and
Melissa Esnal Olguin, 8-2, at the top position. The W&M duo won for
the fourth time in their last five matches to improve to 12-10 on the season.
Like they had against VCU earlier in the week, Mesgarzadeh and Cepeda quickly
pushed the lead to 3-0 with convincing singles victories at the No. 2 and No. 4
singles posts. Both players won their fourth straight and for the eighth time
in their last nine matches with the straight-set victories.
Cepeda was the first singles player off the court at the No.
4 slot as she made quick work of Juliana Pires, 6-1, 6-1. The Tribe sophomore
improved to a team-best 23-13 overall on the season with her 15th dual-match victory. Fellow classmate Mesgarzadeh took the
opening set from Diana Ivanova, 6-3, before steamrolling her Monarch
counterpart with a spotless, 6-0, triumph in the second. She improved to 11-9
on the year and a remarkable 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position.
For the first time in her career, Mamiit provided the
clinching match with a straight-set win at the No. 5 post. The Tribe rookie
improved to 10-8 on the season with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Margarita Belykova.
Mamiit improved to 3-1 at the No. 5 singles position for the Green and Gold.
W&M will be the No. 1 seed in the Colonial Athletic
Association Championship slated for April 21-24 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis
Center in Norfolk, Va. The official draw and match times for the 2011 CAA
Championship will be released by the league office early next week.
