Williamsburg, Va. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team fell to in-state rival VMI on Wednesday
night, 5-1, at Plumeri Park. With the
loss, the Tribe falls to 18-17 on the season while the Keydets improve to
16-16-1 on the year.
Taking the hard-luck loss for the Tribe was starter Jay
McCarthy, who pitched well in his four innings of work. McCarthy surrendered just one unearned run on
four hits while striking out a pair. Out
of the bullpen, John Farrell
, Reid Killen
, and Brett Koehler
combined to throw
3.1 innings, striking out four, walking none, and allowing just one hit.
Offensively, junior Tadd Bower
drove in the Tribe's only
run, while senior Derrick Osteen
and sophomore Ryan Brown
each had a pair of
hits for the College. Junior Sean Aiken
and freshman Devin White
also had hits on the evening for the Green and Gold.
After neither team could push across a run in the first
three innings, the Keydets tallied all five of their runs in the next three
frames, highlighted by a three run sixth to take a 5-0 lead in to the bottom of
the inning.
In the Tribe's half, Osteen led off the inning with a great
bunt single down the third base line.
After a fly out, White smacked a double down the left-field line to put
runners on second and third for Bower with one out. Bower didn't wait long, hitting a sharp
single to left field, scoring Osteen from third.
The Tribe was unable to muster any other great chances in the
ball game and could not come up with a timely hit. For the game, both teams left eight runners
on base. Despite holding the VMI offense
to no runs in the final three innings, the Tribe would fall to the Keydets,
5-1.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will head south
this weekend for a critical, three-game series with CAA-rival UNC
Wilmington. First pitch of the
three-game set is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 15.
