Tribe Pulls Off Pair of Upsets in Setback to No. 8 Virginia

Williamsburg, Va. - The No. 47 William and Mary women's tennis program pulled off a pair of impressive upsets in its 6-1 setback to No. 8-ranked Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe's top doubles pair of sophomore Anik Cepeda and freshman Hope Johnson knocked off their second top-15 team of the season, while freshman Jeltje Loomans recorded her first collegiate singles win against  a nationally opponent. The College fell to 6-6 overall, while UVA upped its ledger to 11-2.

Johnson and Cepeda upended the No. 11-ranked doubles team in the country of Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic, 8-6, at the No. 1 post. The Tribe tandem improved to 7-6 on the season in knocking off their third nationally-ranked foe. Earlier this season, Cepeda and Johnson knocked off the No. 4-ranked Duke team in the teams' dual match.

In singles play, Loomans won for the third time in her last four matches with a three-set victory at the No. 2 position. The Tribe rookie upset No. 42-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh for her fifth singles triumph of the year. After Loomans claimed the first set, 6-2, Hardenbergh rallied to force a third-set with a 6-3 win in the second. The W&M freshman pulled through in the third, outlasting the top-50 nationally ranked player, 6-3.

The Green and Gold returns to action when it hits the road for its Spring Break trip in Bradenton, Fla. W&M will face No. 58 Missouri on Monday, March 7, before meeting Michigan State on Wednesday, March 9. The Tribe will play both matches at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton with start times of 10 a.m. The Tribe's next home contest will be against No. 59 Minnesota on Tuesday, March 15. The match will be at 3 p.m. at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
