Williamsburg, Va.
- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team won its 12th
game in 15
tries on a soggy Wednesday night in Williamsburg, beating the visiting Norfolk
State Spartans, 9-4. With the win, the
Tribe evens its season record at 14-14, while NSU falls to 8-16 on the
season. The victory over Norfolk State
was the Tribe's 25th
-straight win over the Spartans.
Freshman catcher Devin White
paced the Tribe's offense on
Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Sophomores Derek Lowe
and Ryan Brown
each
drove in a pair, while pinch hitter Jackson Shaver
had a RBI single in the
eighth inning.
Sophomore Matt Wainman
had a stellar start for the Tribe,
going five innings while only allowing one run.
Wainman struck out eight batters, walked two, and only allowed one hit
on the day to earn his first win of the season.
The Tribe's bullpen finished out the game for the College, with four
pitchers combining to allow three unearned runs on five hits. The quartet struck out seven while walking
three.
After the Spartans scored a run in the top of the first, the
Tribe responded with three runs in the bottom half to take the lead. After a pair of walks started the inning,
junior Stephen Arcure
attempted to sacrifice the runners into scoring
position. Arcure laid a great bunt down
the third base line, forcing the NSU catcher to rush his throw. The throw got past the Spartan's first
baseman, allowing freshman Ryan Lindemuth
to score, tying the game at 1-1.
Three batters later, the bases were loaded with two away for
White. Swinging at the first pitch,
White singled through the left side of the infield, scoring two runs for the
College. After one complete inning, the
College led Norfolk State, 3-1.
After not scoring in the second, the Tribe added to its lead
in the bottom of the third inning. After
back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt, runners were on second and third for
White. Once again White came through for
the College, lining a single through the right side to score a run. Next up was Lowe, who promptly doubled down
the left field line on the first pitch he saw, scoring two and clearing the
bases. On Lowe's two-run double, the
Tribe took a 6-1 lead after three frames.
In both the sixth and eighth innings, the Spartans would
score one run, cutting the Tribe's lead to 6-3 heading in to the bottom of the
eighth. In the Tribe's half of the frame
the College scored three runs, pushing its lead to 9-3. In the inning, Brown had a two-run single
through the left side, while Shaver pushed a single through the right side of
the infield to score a run for the Green and Gold.
The Spartans attempted a rally in the top of the ninth
inning but fell short, scoring just one run, making the Tribe's winning margin
over Norfolk State, 9-4.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will host the
Hofstra Pride this weekend at Plumeri Park in a critical, CAA series. The three-game set gets underway on Friday,
April 1, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
