Tribe Pulls Out Thrilling Marathon Victory over No. 40 Brown

Williamsburg, Va. - In a four-hour and 50-minute marathon, the William and Mary women's tennis team rallied for an impressive 4-3 victory over No. 40-ranked Brown on Sunday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis. Trailing 3-2, freshman Jeltje Loomans pulled the Tribe even with a three-set victory at the No. 4 position, before sophomore Marlen Mesgarzadeh sent the Green and Gold into a celebration with the clinching victory at the No. 3 post to snapped the Bears' seven-match winning streak. W&M improved to 10-8 on the year, while Brown dropped to 10-6.

W&M started things off by winning a highly competitive doubles point. The Tribe's No. 3 tandem of senior Lauren Sabacinski and Loomans continued its impressive play, winning for the fifth straight match. The Green and Gold pair downed Carissa Aboubakare and Misia Krasowski, 9-7, to give the College the early advantage. Sabacinski and Loomans improved to 6-1 on the year.

After a Brown win at the No. 2 spot, the initial point of the match came down to the top slot where the Bears' team of Bianca Aboubakare and Jessica Harrow led the Tribe's 50th-ranked pair of sophomore Anik Cepeda and freshman Hope Johnson , 7-6.  The Tribe tandem rallied winning two straight games to take an 8-7 advantage. The Bears' top team fought off a pair of match points in the 16th game, but the Tribe won the final two points as Johnson adjusted to a return that hit the net and tucked it inside the right doubles line for the victory. Cepeda and Johnson won for the third time in their last four matches in recording their 10th victory of the season.

Brown won the first two singles matches off the court at the No. 2 and No. 6 position to take a 2-1 advantage. Cepeda answered back for the College with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ariel Caldwell at the No. 5 position. The Tribe sophomore won for the fifth time in her last six matches and upped her team-leading overall record to 20-13 and her dual-match mark to 11-7.

The balance of the match came down to a trio of three-set matches at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 positions. After Brown took a 3-2 lead with a win at the top singles slot, Loomans won at the No. 4 post to knot things up again. Loomans won the first set, 6-2, before Harrow took the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6. The Bear player was up a break at 4-3 in the third, before the Tribe rookie reeled off 12 of 13 points on the way to three straight games in claiming her eight win of the season, 6-4. She upped her dual-match ledger to 6-4, while winning for the third time in her last four matches.

With the match even at three, it came down to a third setter between Mesgarzadeh and Cassandra Herzberg at the No. 3 position. After splitting the first two sets with Mesgarzadeh winning the first, 6-3, and Herzberg the second, 7-5, the counterparts traded blows in the high-intensity third set. Mesgarzadeh fought off an early break to get back on serve, before breaking Herzberg in the 12th game for a 7-5 clinching victory. The Tribe sophomore won for the fifth time in her last six matches to tally her eighth win of the season.

The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Big East foe Syracuse on Saturday, April 2, as apart of the USTA Campus Kids Day. Campus Kids Days are designed to expose current and aspiring junior players (and their parents and coaches) to college tennis. The match is slated for an 11 a.m. start time at the Millie West Tennis Facility. Kids' Day activities on court will be between singles and doubles. An autograph session with Tribe Tennis posters along with a question and answer session with players will follow the match. Refreshments and snacks will be available, and the first 10 kids in attendance will receive a Tribe Tennis hat. Admission to Tribe Tennis matches is free.
