Newark, Del. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped
on Friday afternoon, dropping a 6-2 decision at Delaware. With the loss, the College's record falls to
11-14 on the season and to 5-5 in CAA play, while the Blue Hens improve to
12-10 on the year and to 6-1 in conference play.
At the plate, senior Derrick Osteen
, junior Tadd Bower
,
sophomore Ryan Williams
, and freshman Ryan Lindemuth
all had one hit for the
Tribe. On the mound, junior Matt
Davenport took the loss despite throwing his first complete game of the
season. Davenport went eight innings,
allowing six earned runs on five hits while striking out seven batters.
On a cold, windy day in Newark, the Blue Hens jumped out to
an early 5-0 advantage over the Tribe.
Delaware scored one run in the bottom of the first and then added four
more in the bottom of the third to stake its lead after three full innings.
In the top of the fourth, the College got on the scoreboard thanks
to some clutch, two-out hitting and a critical Blue Hen error. With two down, the trio of Williams, Bower,
and Lindemuth all singled to load the bases for junior Stephen Arcure
. On a 2-0 count, Arcure grounded sharply right
to the Delaware second baseman who looked to be in position to make the play,
but the ball went right through his legs and trickled out to the outfield,
allowing two runs to come across. After
three and a half, the Tribe trailed UD, 5-2.
The lead would not remain three for long, however, as the Blue
Hens tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead back to
four, 6-2.
The Tribe's best shot to cut in to the Delaware lead came in
the top of the fifth inning, but the College left runners stranded on second
and third. For the game, William and
Mary left eight runners on base. In the
late innings, the Tribe wasn't able to get any rally started and fell to the
Blue Hens, 6-2.
Due to cold temperatures and inclement weather in the forecast
for Sunday in Newark, the Tribe and the Blue Hens will play a doubleheader starting
a 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. Game two
of the doubleheader will begin approximately 30 minutes following the
conclusion of game one.
