Arlington, Va. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team won its fourth road game in the last week
on Wednesday afternoon, beating the George Washington Colonials, 9-4, in
Arlington, Virginia. With the win, the
Tribe improves its record to 7-13, while GW falls to 6-11 on the season.
Sophomore Ryan Brown
and junior Stephen Arcure
led the Tribe's
offense on the day, with each player collecting three hits. Brown knocked in a pair of runs while Arcure
had one RBI for the College. Senior
Jonathan Slattery
drove in two for the College while Chris Forsten
, Buster Gean, and Derrick Osteen
all had one RBI on the afternoon.
On the mound, sophomore
Brett Goodloe
had his
second-straight solid start for the College.
Goodloe pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits
while striking out four on his way to the victory. Junior
Reid Killen
would pitch the final two
innings to earn his second save of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Tribe would get on the
scoreboard first in the top of the second.
Junior Tadd Bower
led off the inning with a walk, and two batters later, Forsten would join him on base after drawing a walk of his own. With runners on second and third, Brown
stepped to the plate for the College.
After fouling off numerous pitches, Brown lined a 1-2 offering in to
right-center field, scoring Bower from second and giving the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Colonials took the lead
right back from the Tribe, crossing the plate twice to take a 2-1 lead after
two full innings.
After a scoreless third and fourth innings for both teams,
the College tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to some clutch two-out
hitting. With two down, Arcure singled
to right field to get on base for Slattery.
The senior came through for the Green and Gold, lining a double to
left-center field, scoring Arcure all the way from first base. After four and a half innings, the game was
tied at 2-2.
The Tribe continued to score runs in the sixth, retaking the
lead from the Colonials with three runs.
Sophomore
Kevin Nutter
started the frame getting hit by a pitch and was
then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman
Ryan Lindemuth
. Next up was Gean, who lined the first pitch
he saw in to left field, scoring Nutter from second.
Brown joined Gean on base next, getting hit by a pitch to
put runners on first and second. Two
pitches in to Osteen's at-bat, both Gean and Brown took off on steal
attempts. The GW catcher's throw to third
got away from the third baseman, trickling back towards shortstop, allowing
Gean to score on the fielding error.
After a walk to Osteen, Arcure came to the plate and knocked his third
hit of the game, singling home Brown with a hit through the left side of the
infield. Headed to the bottom of the
sixth, the Tribe led George Washington, 5-2.
The Colonials would cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the
sixth, plating one. After a scoreless
seventh, the College doubled its lead to four runs, scoring a pair in the top
of the eighth. After a single and a
walk, Brown loaded the bases with a bunt single to the left side of the
infield. Osteen stepped to the plate for
the College and collected a RBI, drawing a walk to score Gean from third. Slattery followed, driving home the final run
of the inning with a fielder's choice to the shortstop. After seven and a half, the Tribe's advantage
over the Colonials stood at 7-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Colonials were threatening
to get back in the ballgame. With one
run already in, the Tribe turned to Killen, who struck out the side to limit
the George Washington damage to just one run.
After eight, William and Mary led the Colonials, 7-4.
In the top of the ninth, the College added a pair of
insurance runs to its advantage. Nutter
started the inning with a single up the middle and then moved to second on a
failed pickoff attempt at first. After
another sacrifice bunt from Lindemuth, Nutter was on third base for
Forsten. The Tribe catcher came up big,
knocking an infield single to the shortstop that plated Nutter to give the
College an 8-4 lead.
With Forsten now on second after a wild pitch, Brown blasted
a double off the wall in left field, easily scoring Forsten from second base,
giving the Tribe its winning margin of 9-4.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will return to
Williamsburg to host CAA-rival George Mason this weekend at Plumeri Park. The three-game series gets underway on
