Williamsburg, Va. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team's ninth inning rally fell short on a cold
Tuesday night at Plumeri Park and the College would lose to the visiting
Richmond Spiders, 2-1. With the loss, the
Tribe falls to 6-13 on the season, while the Spiders improved to 6-10-2.
Freshman Ryan Lindemuth
went 2-for-3 on the day for the
Tribe with a double and a walk, while sophomore Kevin Nutter
was 1-for-3 with a
RBI. Also collecting hits for the Tribe were
sophomores Ryan Williams
and Ryan Brown
, as well as freshman Devin White
.
On the mound, sophomore Matt Wainman
had a great start for
the College, allowing only one unearned run.
Wainman struck out a career-high 10 batters while scattering three hits
and walking a pair. Out of the bullpen,
sophomore Brett Koehler
was strong, pitching 1.2 perfect innings while striking
out one.
With each team's pitcher going well, offense was at a
premium in the early part of Tuesday night's game. After three scoreless innings, the Spiders
would take advantage of a pair of Tribe errors.
With a runner on first, the College tried to pick him off first but the
throw went awry. After collecting the
ball, Nutter
tried to get the runner at third, but his throw also
got away, allowing the Richmond runner to trot home. After four innings,
Richmond led William and Mary, 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Tribe would put across its
first run of the game, trying the contest at 1-1. Leading off the inning was White, who started
the frame with a double to left-center field.
After being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Derrick
Osteen, White was only 90 feet away with Nutter at the plate. With the count at 2-1, the squeeze play was
on for the Green and Gold. White took
off from third toward home while Nutter squared around, laying down a great
bunt down the first-base line. White
scored easily for the College, tying the game at 1-1 after five full innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Spiders would retake on
a RBI groundout. With the bases loaded
with one out, Phil Ruzbarsky would ground out weakly to second base, allowing
the run from third to score easily.
After eight innings, the Spiders clung to a 2-1 lead.
With the score still 2-1, the Tribe looked to stage a rally
in the bottom of the ninth. Lindemuth
started the frame with a single up the middle, but would get tagged out on
second when junior Stephen Arcure
grounded in to a fielder's choice. Up next for the College was Brown, who
singled through the left side to put runners on first and second for the Tribe
with one out.
White stepped up to the plate next for the Tribe and blasted
a ball to right field, but the liner went right to the Richmond outfielder for
the second out. On the line out,
however, both runners would move up to put the tying run at third and the
winning run in scoring position at second for Osteen. Osteen battled in his at-bat, but would
eventually strike out swinging, wrapping up the 2-1 win for the Spiders.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will hit the road
and head north on Wednesday, March 16 to face the George Washington
Colonials. First pitch for tomorrow's
game is set for 4 p.m.
