Charlottesville, Va.
- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team fell on the road to No. 8-ranked
Virginia on Tuesday night, 9-0. With the
loss, the College's record falls to 2-8 on the season, while the Cavaliers improve
to 7-1.
Offensively, the Tribe would get hits from senior Jonathan Slattery, senior Derrick Osteen, junior Tadd Bower, junior Chris Forsten, and
sophomore Ryan Williams. Forsten also
stood out behind the plate, throwing out three potential UVA
base-stealers. On the mound, sophomore
Brett Goodloe was solid in relief of starter Matt Wainman, allowing one earned
run on three hits in three innings of work.
The Cavaliers would get on the board early on Tuesday
afternoon, scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a Steven Proscia two-out
double. Virginia would then add on runs
in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-0 lead headed into the top of the
seventh.
After not getting a runner on in the first frame, the
College would get one runner on base in each of the next five innings headed in
the top of the seventh. Slattery would lead off the top half with a hard-hit
single down the left-field line. After a
groundout, Slattery would move to third on a Forsten single up the middle to
put runners on the corners for the Tribe with just one out. The Green and Gold would be unable to
capitalize, and after a strikeout and a popout, the inning would end with the
score remaining, 5-0.
The Tribe would be unable to get any rally started in the eighth
or ninth innings against Cavaliers. The College
lost to No. 8-ranked Virginia, 9-0.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will return to
Williamsburg this weekend to open up conference play. The College will host CAA-rival James Madison
for a three-game series starting this Friday, March 4. First pitch at Plumeri Park is scheduled for
4 p.m.
