W&M Women Fall at Towson, 66-55

The William and Mary women's basketball team fought hard Sunday afternoon but was unable to complete the road comeback at Towson, falling 66-55 to the Tigers.

Junior guard Taysha Pye (Bronx, N.Y.) led all scorers in the game with 18 points, hitting 9-15 shots from the field and also pulling in six rebounds.  Sophomore forward Emily Correal (Venetia, Pa.) also reached double-figures for the Tribe with 10 points, while Katy Oblinger (Altoona, Pa.) was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc for nine points.  Sophomore center Jaclyn McKenna (Huntington, N.Y.) had a game-high seven rebounds to go with her six points, and junior Katherine DeHenzel (Bowie, Md.) dished out a game-high six assists.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw the scored tied seven times and the lead changed 10 times.  The Tribe was able to go on a 10-2 run in the middle of the half, turning a three-point deficit into a five-point lead at 22-17 at the eight-minute mark.  Towson responded with a run of their own to go ahead 25-22, but Oblinger's first triple of the game knotted the score again and kicked off another 9-4 run for W&M, capped by Pye's sixth basket of the half with 2:29 remaining that made the score 31-29 in favor of the Tribe.  From there, however, Towson would close the half with three baskets while the Tribe's shots were just lipping out, putting the College down four at the break, 35-31.

As the second half developed, Towson was able to take advantage of hot shooting from deep to begin to slowly pull away despite terrific baskets on the part of Pye, Correal, and McKenna.  Oblinger hit her second three-pointer of the afternoon at 11:51, cutting the lead back to four at 48-44, and the teams traded lay-ups over the next four minutes to keep the margin there at the 7:19 media timeout, 52-48.  A cold streak hit the Tribe, and Towson was able to pull away and go up by as many as 16.  Freshman Kaitlyn Mathieu (Waterboro, Maine) broke the impasse for the Tribe finally, and Oblinger's third three and two free throws by Taylor Hilton (Washington, D.C.) cut the final margin down to 11, 66-55 as the buzzer sounded.

William and Mary has three of its next four games at home, beginning Thursday night, Feb. 10, against UNC Wilmington.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Kaplan Arena.
