The William and Mary women's basketball team once again dominated play in the second half, before falling on the road at VCU Sunday afternoon 62-56. Today's game also finalized seeding for the Tribe in the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Championship, where the College will take on the No.-5 seed (TBA) on Thursday, March 10th, at 2:30 p.m.
W&M was led on the day by a pair of career-best efforts. Sophomore center
Jaclyn McKenna (Huntington, N.Y.) shot 9-13 overall and hit four of her five three point attempts en route to a game- and career-high 24 points while also pulling in seven rebounds. Junior captain
Katherine DeHenzel (Bowie, Md.) also dished out a career-best 10 assists to go with six rebounds and three steals. DeHenzel's total, tied for seventh-most in school history, lifted her career total to an even 250 assists and was the most since teammate
Katy Oblinger (Altoona, Pa.) also had 10 against Howard on Dec. 4, 2008.
Sophomore
Emily Correal (Venetia, Pa.) also reached double-digit scoring, pouring in 12 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Classmate
Taylor Hilton (Washington, D.C.) had eight points and six rebounds, while freshman
Kaitlyn Mathieu (Waterboro, Maine) scored seven points with three rebounds, including five in the second half. As a team, the Tribe hit all eight of its free throws and dished out 18 assists.
After the Tribe's sophomore class scored 23 of the team's 25 first-half points, the fireworks really got started after the intermission. Down 13 points, McKenna canned a three from the top of the key just 12 seconds into the half, and junior
Taysha Pye (Bronx, N.Y.) converted a traditional three-point play on the next possession to cut the lead to single-digits at 40-31. After VCU was able to drop in a couple of jumpers, the Tribe turned up the heat in its defense to "stifling", and embarked on a 14-4 run that spanned just over six minutes cut the lead back to seven, 52-45 with 7:15 remaining. The Rams hit two more jumpers to get the lead briefly back in double-digits, but Correal hit a jumper on the wing just past the five minute mark and sparked an 11-3 run that brought the Tribe within three with a minute remaining. McKenna was the heavy-lifter for the run, and indeed the entire second half, accounting for the final nine points that W&M scored and 17 of 31 in the second half. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Tribe would get, as VCU was able to hit three free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal the win.
William and Mary returns home Wednesday night to close out the regular season against Hofstra at 7 p.m. Before tip-off, the Tribe will hold a brief ceremony thanking and honoring its three seniors; Oblinger,
Lindsey Moller (Longmont, Colo.), and
Aleia Gland (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).
