Lexington, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team dropped close game at VMI on a cold
afternoon in Lexington, 4-1. With the
loss, the College's record falls to 0-5 on the year, while the Keydets improve
to 1-3.
Senior Derrick Osteen would drive in the College's lone run
in the game, while sophomore Ryan Brown would steal a pair of bases. Freshman Ryan Lindemuth went 1-for-4 with a
run scored, while sophomore Ryan Williams had a double for the Tribe.
On the mound, sophomore Matt Wainman was solid, allowing
just one earned run in 4.1 innings, striking out five. Out of the bullpen, senior Reid Killen
pitched well, not allowing a run in two innings while striking out a pair.
After a scoreless first inning, the Tribe's offense would
get going in the top of the second. With
one out, Lindemuth singled through the left side and was joined on base by
junior Chris Forsten who laid down a perfect bunt down the first-base line for
a hit. The bases were then loaded when
sophomore Derek Lowe drew his first walk of the season. Up to the plate stepped Osteen, who with the
squeeze play on and the runners on the move, laid a great bunt down the
first-base line, plating Lindemuth from third.
Osteen's RBI gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The College's lead would last for three innings before the
Keydets would get on the board. VMI
would put across three runs in the bottom of the fifth, only one earned, to
take a two-run lead over the Tribe.
The College would get base runners in both the sixth and
ninth innings, but would be unable to get a rally going, and would fall to VMI,
4-1.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will open up the
home portion of its schedule this weekend as the College will host Fairfield
for four games at Plumeri Park. Game one
of the four-game series gets underway on Friday, February 25, with first pitch
scheduled for 4 p.m.
