Hempstead, N.Y. - A Charles Jenkins 35-foot heave at the buzzer sent the
William and Mary men's basketball to another heartbreaking defeat, this time in
overtime, as Hofstra downed the Green and Gold, 81-78, on Tuesday night at the
Mack Sports Complex. The Tribe led by three, 69-66, with 9.4 seconds remaining in the
contest, before Jenkins hit a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining to send the
game to OT. The Tribe fell to 7-20 overall and 3-13 in CAA action while Hofstra
clinched a first round bye in the CAA Tournament in improving to 18-9 on the
year and 12-4 in league play.
Junior forward Quinn McDowell turned in an impressive
double-double performance with 28 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. It
marked his third career double-double, and he finished 8-of-16 from the floor,
6-of-10 from 3-point range and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Freshman Julian Boatner finished with 16 points on four 3-pointers and a
perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. His four 3-pointers moved him into
third on the W&M freshman 3-pointers made list with 43 on the year.
W&M trailed Hofstra by five, 65-60, with two minutes
remaining in regulation before Boatner canned a 3-pointer from the left side to close
the Tribe within two. After a Jenkins free throw, freshman guard Brandon Britt
was fouled on a drive to the basket and he hit both free throws to close the
gap to one, 66-65, with 1:12 left.
The Green and Gold got a defensive stop before Boatner was
fouled on a drive to the basket. The freshman guard calmly stepped to the
line and gave the College a one-point advantage with 25.3 seconds left. The
Pride went to Jenkins, but his driving lay-up from the left side was blocked by
senior forward Marcus Kitts. W&M came up with the ball and Britt was fouled. He stepped to the
line and pushed the W&M lead to 69-66 with 9.4 seconds remaining. Following
a Hofstra timeout, Jenkins buried a dagger of a 3-pointer from the top of the
key to tie the game with 2.7 seconds remaining. The Tribe's desperation attempt
at the win came up short, and W&M headed to overtime for the first time
this season.
The Pride scored the first five points of the overtime
period and led 74-69 following a jumper from Mike Moore with 2:57 left. Sophomore
forward Kyle Gaillard scored the Tribe's first points of the extra session on
the driving lay-up, before a pair of McDowell free throws closed the gap to one
a minute later. After a David Imes free throw, McDowell gave the College its
first lead of the overtime period with a 3-pointer from the right side at the
1:07 mark.
Jenkins hit a leaner in the lane with 32 seconds remaining
to put the Pride back on top, 77-76. Hofstra got a stop on the defensive end and
Brad Kelleher was fouled. He hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to push the
lead to two. With 13.1 seconds remaing, the Tribe went to McDowell as Boatner
lobbed a beautiful pass over the top of the Pride defense. The junior captain
was fouled on his lay-up attempt, before stepping to the line and buryiing both
freebies to knot things up at 78 with 4.5 ticks on the lock.
The game seemed destined for a second overtime period, but
Jenkins caught the inbounds pass below the foul line and dribbled just over the
mid-court stripe. His 35-foot heave as the buzzer sounded rattled home to give
the Pride the 81-78 victory.
W&M finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (23-of-54)
from the field, including 12-of-25 from 3-point range. The College was
impressive from the free throw line, hitting 20-of-22 (90.9 percent), including
a perfect 14-of-14 in the second half and overtime. Hofstra shot 41.9 percent
(26-of-62) for the game and was 12-of-31 from 3-point range. W&M held a
40-33 advantage on the glass.
It was all Hofstra early as the Pride jumped out to a 15-3
lead on the strength of Jenkins and Moore. The duo scored Hofstra first 15
points, including four 3-pointers. Jenkins' triple at the 15:15 mark gave the
Pride a 12-point lead.
The final 15 minutes of the first half went the way of the
Tribe as the College outscored Hofstra, 31-11, over the stretch to take a halftime lead. W&M started things off with 11 straight points as five different
Tribe players got in the scoring column. A pair of Boatner free throws at the
9:11 closed the gap to 15-14.
A McDowell 3-pointer gave the College its first lead of the
game, 19-18, at the 7:02 mark. Hofstra
retook the lead, 24-22, on a Imes jumper, before the Green and Gold ended the
half on a 12-2 run. A McDowell 3-pointer put the College back on top, 25-24,
before junior JohnMark Ludwick and sophomore Matt Rum canned back-to-back
triples to end the half and send W&M to a 34-26 advantage at the intermission.
The W&M lead reached as many as 13 as the College scored
the opening five points of the second half. After Kitts scored in
the low post on the first possession of the half, Boatner knocked down a
3-pointer to give the College a 39-26 lead with 18:27 left.
Jenkins led an 18-2 Hofstra run as the Pride came roaring
back. He scored 11 of the Pride's 18 points on the run, and his back-to-back
3-pointers gave Hofstra at 44-41 lead with 13:27 remaining in the contest.
Tribe 3-pointers from McDowell and Boatner gave the College
a 51-49 at the 7:56 mark. Kelleher answered with a triple for Hofstra in
starting a 9-2 run. A pair of Moore free throws at the 4:56 mark put the Pride
on top 58-53. The Pride maintined its five-point lead, taking a 65-60 advantage on a Moore lay-up with two minutes to play.
Jenkins shared game-high scoring honors with McDowell as he
finished with 28 points, including five 3-pointers. Moore tallied 25
points, while Imes notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Kitts recorded his 100th career blocked shot against
the Pride as he finished with four rejections to go along with seven points and
eight rebounds. Britt scored seven points to go along with a career-high five
rebounds and three assists. Junior Kendrix Brown, who returned to the Tribe
starting lineup, had a nice floor game despite battling foul trouble. He led
the Tribe with five assists compared to just two turnovers, while pulling down
four rebounds. Gaillard finished with six points and six rebounds, and freshman
Tim Rusthoven added six points off the bench.
The Tribe will take a break from the conference slate when
it takes part in ESPN Sears BracketBusters on Saturday, Feb. 19, when it hosts
Big South foe Radford. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Kaplan Arena.
