W&M Falls in Overtime Thriller, 70-66

The William and Mary women's basketball pushed Delaware into another overtime thriller Sunday afternoon, hitting a season-high nine three-pointers before falling 70-66 in overtime.  It was the third overtime game of the season, the most for the Tribe since playing in three overtime games back in 2002-03.

The Tribe had six players core at least nine points, and four of those reached double-figures including senior Katy Oblinger (Altoona, Pa.).  Oblinger tied career-highs with four three-pointers made and attempted, en route to tying another career-best of 12 points.  The senior also had three assists and three steals.  Freshman Kaitlyn Mathieu (Waterboro, Maine) also set career-highs in three-pointing shooting, hitting two of her seven attempts while scoring 10 points.  Mathieu added six rebounds to her day, along with an assist and a steal.  Also reaching double-digits was a pair of sophomores.  Emily Correal (Venetia, Pa.) had a team-high 13 points, to go with a career-high three assists, two blocks, and three rebounds.  Taylor Hilton (Washington, D.C.) had 12 points to go with three rebounds and two steals.  Juniors Katherine DeHenzel (Bowie, Md.) and Taysha Pye (Bronx, N.Y.) each scored nine points, with Pye adding seven rebounds and DeHenzel four assists with three steals.

In the first half, Correal and Hilton carried their team through the first nine minutes with four points apiece.  Delaware had built itself out to a six point lead, 14-8, but with 11 minutes left Oblinger splashed the first triple of her afternoon and Mathieu followed on the next possession with her first to even the score.  After Delaware pushed out to another five-point lead over the next three minutes, the pair helped to power an 8-2 run that saw W&M take the lead, 22-21 with 3:31 remaining.  Mathieu knocked down a pair of jumpers in the run while Oblinger had another three, and Jaclyn McKenna (Huntington, N.Y.) provided the go-ahead point.  The Blue Hens's would close out the half with three free throws and jumper, heading into the break up four at 26-22.

The second half would belong to the Tribe just as the first was controlled by Delaware.  The first nine minutes were very evenly played, with W&M responded to every Delaware basket or set of free throws with a shot of its own.  Finally, a three-pointer by DeHenzel at 11:20 unleashed two minutes of some of the best basketball of the season.  After the shot, Hilton stole the ball on the other end of the floor and raced down for a three-point play that cut the lead to a single point, 35-34 with 10:56 on the clock.  The Blue Hens scored two more free throws to push the lead out to three, but DeHenzel nailed another three on the next trip into the offensive zone and stole the ball on the very next possession to score three more the original way, putting the College on top by its largest margin of the afternoon at 40-37.  The lead would continue to grow, as Correal worked her way inside for a lay-up, and kicked out to Oblinger on the next possession to put the Tribe ahead eight, 45-37 with nine minutes remaining after a 14-2 run.  Delaware would respond with an eight-point streak of its own to tie the game for the seventh time, 45-45, but Correal was there to once again to swing in a a lay-up while being fouled, and converted the freebie to put W&M back up by three.  The Blue Hens made another run to try and win the game in regulation, scoring two jumpers to Hilton's one, and kocking down two free throws with 24 seconds left to go ahead one, 51-50.  Pye was there, however, to score a free throw of her own with 12 seconds on the clock to tie the score at 51-51, where it would stay through the horn.

As cold as Delaware had been shooting all game (17-57, 29.8% through regulation), the visitors heated up in the beginning of the overtime period to jump out 61-53 while hitting three of their first four shots.  The Tribe wasn't having any of it, however, hitting three triples in the same number of possessions to chop the margin to two, 66-64 with 26 seconds remaining.  Hilton got the 9-2 run started with 53 seconds left, and after the final two free throws of Elena Delle Donne's 33-point night (17-19 from the line), Oblinger found Mathieu behind the arc in transition to cut the lead to five.  On the very next possession, Oblinger stole the ball once, and then re-stole it after Delaware attempted to take it back.  Sprinting down the floor, she canned her fourth three-pointer on the run, and the Tribe was within two.  The Blue Hens were able to salt the game at the free throw line, however, and held on for the 70-66 win.

William and Mary returns to the road for three of the next four games, beginning Thursday night at Drexel.  The 7 p.m. tip-off will be televised live on the Comcast Sports family of channels from Philadelphia.
