Philadelphia - A dagger 3-pointer from the right corner by Drexel's Chris
Fouch with 11.9 seconds remaining sent the William and Mary men's basketball
team to a heartbreaking, 54-52, loss on Saturday night. The Green and Gold shot
55.6 percent from the floor in the second half in an attempt to overcome a
one-point halftime deficit, but Fouch scored 14 of his game-high 16 points in
the second 20 minutes, including the clincher., to lead the Dragons The Tribe falls to 7-19 overall
and 3-12 in CAA play, while Drexel improves to 17-8 on the year and 9-6 in
league action.
Senior forward Marcus Kitts led the Tribe with 11 points on
4-of-5 shooting from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line to go along
with three blocked shots. He moved into sole possession of fourth place on the Tribe's career blocked
shots list, bringing his total to 96. Junior forward Quinn McDowell
finished with nine points and a team-best three assists, while fellow classmate Kendrix Brown had a nice all-around
game off the bench, scoring five points to go along with a team-high seven
rebounds and three assists compared to zero turnovers.
The Green and Gold quickly erased a 24-23 halftime deficit
with back-to-back 3-pointers on the opening two possessions of the second half.
McDowell knocked down a triple from the left corner, before finding freshman
Julian Boatner, who finished with seven points, for a three from the right corner. The consecutive 3-pointers
gave the College a 29-24 lead just over a minute into the second half and
forced a Drexel timeout.
The Dragons pulled back even at 31, before taking a three-point
advantage, 38-35, on a long 3-pointer from Derrick Thomas at the 11:31 mark. The
lead remained three following a pair of Fouch free throws with 8:03 remaining,
before the College scored four straight points to regain the lead. Brown
knocked down a jumper from the right side, before McDowell found freshman Tim Rusthoven for a wide open lay-up to put W&M on top 43-42 with 6:35 left.
The W&M lead was still one, 45-44, when Brown found
Kitts for a fastbreak dunk. On the play, the Tribe senior out-ran the Drexel
bigmen down the floor and finished with getting fouled. He completed the
conventional three-point play to give the Tribe a 48-44 lead with 4:10
remaining.
Fouch answered with a 3-pointer to cut the Tribe lead back
to one, and the team's traded buckets until the final 1:20 of the contest.
Following a 30-second Tribe timeout, W&M had possession, but freshman guard
Brandon Britt, who saw his 10-game double-digit scoring streak snapped as he finished with eight, was whistled for an offensive foul with 1:16 remaining. On the
ensuing Drexel possession, Frantz Massenat hit a pair of free throws to give
the Dragons at 51-50 lead with 56.1 second remaining.
With 44.7 seconds left, Boatner drew a foul and went to the
charity stripe where he connected on 1-of-2 to tie the game at 51. The Dragons
worked the clock, before Fouch drilled the game-winner from the left corner
with a Tribe player draped all over him. The triple gave the Dragons a 54-51
lead with 11.9 second remaining.
On the ensuing Tribe possession, Britt was fouled and he
made 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Drexel's Dartaye Ruffin, who finished
with 16 points and six rebounds, pulled down the rebound and was fouled. He
missed both free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining, and junior forward JohnMark Ludwick came up with the rebound. He sent a long pass up court to McDowell, but
the Tribe's leading scorer could not get off a shot before the final horn.
The Tribe finished the game shooting 41.3 percent (19-of-46)
from the field, including 7-of-19 from 3-point range. The Dragons shot 42.6
percent (20-of-47) from the field and was 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Drexel
held a 33-26 advantage on the glass.
Boatner knocked down a 3-pointer on the Tribe's opening
possession, and the Green and Gold scored eight of the game's first 10 points.
Sophomore Kyle Gaillard canned a triple from the right wing less than three and
a half minutes into the game to give the College an 8-2 lead.
The Tribe lead was again six, 14-8, following a Matt Rum
3-pointer from the left wing, before Drexel went on a run to take its first
lead of the game. Following a Massenat 3-pointer, Ruffin scored six straight
points to put the Dragons on top. Gerald Colds scored on a driving lay-up to
give DU a 19-14 lead with 5:33 remaining.
W&M battled back and pulled even at 21 on a 3-pointer
from the left wing by Brown with 2:33 remaining. The game was tied at 23,
before Colds hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 3.8 seconds remaining to
send the Dragons to the half with a 24-23 lead.
The Green and Gold will continue its two-game road trip when
it travels to Hofstra on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in
