WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team dropped a tough game to the
visiting George Washington Colonials on Wednesday night, 74-66, in Kaplan
Arena. With the loss, the Tribe falls to
6-5 on the season, while the Colonials improve to 6-6 on the year.
Junior Emily Correal notched her 11th career double-double
in the loss, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while classmate Janine Aldridge netted a team-high 20 points to go with four steals and three
assists. Off the bench, junior Taylor
Hilton scored a season-best 11 points.
In the first half on Wednesday, the Tribe was a bit slow out
of the gates, allowing the visiting Colonials to control the first 10 minutes
of the game. At the 9:14 mark of the
opening frame, George Washington had run out to an 11-point lead, 29-18.
Over the next two minutes and 48 seconds, the College
finally answered back, closing the GW lead to 29-28 thanks to a 10-0 run. In the stretch, Aldridge and junior Jaclyn
McKenna each had three points, while Correal and freshman Kyla Kerstetter each had a pair. Despite not
scoring in the run, senior Katherine DeHenzel was key, dishing out three
assists.
For the remainder of the first half, the teams traded
buckets, with George Washington taking a 39-35 lead in to the locker
rooms. In the first 20 minutes for
W&M, nine different players scored, led by Aldridge who had nine and
Correal who added eight while grabbing five rebounds. As a team, the Tribe shot a terrific 48.3%
(14-of-29) from the floor and had 13 assists on its 14 made buckets.
At the onset of the second half, the Tribe quickly cut the
George Washington lead down to two, 39-37, on a Chanel Murchison layup. GW answered right back, however, going on an
8-2 run to retake an eight point advantage.
For the majority of the second half, the Colonials were able
to keep the Tribe at arm's length and with just 5:32 left in the game, GW had a
65-54 lead over the College. Staging one
more rally, the Tribe went on a 8-2 run, cutting the lead to five, but that was
as close as the Tribe came and George Washington held on for a 74-66 road win.
For the game, all 11 Tribe players who played against the
Colonials scored at least two points. As
a team, the Tribe had 20 assists in its 24 made baskets, led by DeHenzel who had
seven and Murchison who tied her career high with four.
The William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team will
continue it's four-game homestand on Friday, December 30 when the College will
play host to Elizabeth City State.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kaplan Arena.
