Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary men's basketball team returned home on
Wednesday night and fell to instate foe Richmond, 92-61. The Spiders
shot 62.1 percent from the field in outdistancing the Green and Gold in just
its second home game of the 2011-12 campaign. W&M dropped to 1-7 on the
year, while Richmond improved to 5-2.
In his first collegiate start, sophomore forward Tim
Rusthoven nearly turned in a double-double performance with a career-high 15
points and eight rebounds against the Spiders. Junior guard
Matt Rum made his
first start of the 2011-12 season against UR and finished with 13 points on
4-of-5 from the floor, including a 2-of-3 effort from 3-point range. Freshman
guard
Marcus Thornton tallied 10 points off the bench, while senior
Kendrix Brown and junior
Doug Howard topped the Green and Gold with two assists apiece.
As a team, W&M shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the
floor, and was 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line. Richmond connected on
62.1 percent (36-of-58) from the floor for the game, including an impressive
63.3 percent in the opening half to jump out to the early lead. The Spiders
also hit for 51.7 percent from 3-point range, knocking down 15 triples on the
evening. UR held a small advantage on the glass, 30-29, and dished out 19
assists.
Freshman guard Kendall Anthony led Richmond with 17 points
on 5-of-7 from 3-point range, while sophomore Cedrick Lindsay added 13 points,
five rebound and four assists, while hitting 3-of-4 from deep. Sophomore
Derrick Williams, senior Josh Duinker and senior Conor Smith added 10 points apiece
in the victory for Richmond. Duinker also shared team highs with five rebounds and four assists.
W&M will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 3, when it
opens CAA play at Georgia State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the GSU Sports
