Washington, D.C. - Playing its fourth straight and sixth in its first seven games away from home, the William and Mary men's basketball team fell at Howard, 67-58, on Saturday afternoon. The Green and Gold dropped to 1-6, while the Bison improved to 2-3 on the season.

Sophomore guard Brandon Britt topped the Tribe for the third time in the last four games with 15 points to go along with a team-best three assists compared to just one turnover. After missing the opening six games of the season due to a foot injury, sophomore forward Tim Rusthoven made an impact in his return to the line-up, scoring 13 points and pulling down a team-best six rebounds in 21 minutes. He was 4-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to go along with two steals and a blocked shot.

Freshman forward Tom Schalk scored the Tribe's opening two buckets of the game, giving the College a 4-2 advantage just over two minutes into the game off a pass from Britt. Howard rattled off a 10-2 run as a Mike Phillips lay-up at the 11:07 mark gave the Bison a 12-6 advantage.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from freshman Marcus Thornton and junior Matt Rum tied the contest at 12 midway through the opening half. Howard retook the lead with four straight points and pushed its cushion to as many as eight, 26-18, following a Calvin Thompson lay-up with 3:42 remaining in the first half. Five straight Tribe points closed the margin to three, before the Bison scored four of the half's final five points to take a 30-24 lead to the locker room.

Howard shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) in the opening half to outdistance the Tribe, who finished shooting 33.3 percent (7-of-21) in the opening 20 minutes. W&M was 8-of-11 from the free throw line in the first half.

Britt scored nine of the Tribe's first 11 points out of the locker room. His back-to-back 3-pointers closed the Howard lead to 36-35 less than six minutes into the second frame. The Bison lead was again one, 41-40, after a Rusthoven conventional 3-point play at the 11:21 mark, before Howard scored six straight points aided by a pair of W&M turnovers to push the lead back to seven, 47-40, with 9:32 left in the game.

Over the remainder of the contest, each time the Tribe cut the deficit to at least four points, Howard found an answer. W&M cut the deficit to 57-53 with two minutes remaining on an offensive putback by senior Kendrix Brown. Howard responded with five straight points, including four from Calvin Thompson to put the game out of reach. The Bison were able to hold off the College by hitting eight of its final 12 free throws.

Howard finished the contest shooting 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field and was 17-of-26 from the free throw line. W&M shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) for the game and 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line. The Bison held a 35-25 advantage on the glass and outscored W&M, 42-24, in the paint.

Thompson led all scorers with 21 points for the Bison, including a 9-of-10 effort from the free throw line. Prince Okoroh added 11 points, while Mike Phillips had 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. For the Tribe, Schalk finished with a career-high 10 points on 5-of-7 from the floor, while fellow classmate Marcus Thornton added eight.

The Tribe returns to action when it hosts Richmond as part of a men's and women's doubleheader on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Tribe women, fresh off a dominating victory at Virginia Tech, will host Longwood at 5 p.m., before the men's game with Richmond at 7:30 p.m. Fans can catch the action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley, Bill McDonald and Charlie Woollum on the call.
