RICHMOND, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team fell on the road to in-state
rival Richmond on Monday night, 77-57.
With the setback, the Tribe's record on the season drops to 1-1, while
the Spiders improve to 2-0.
Junior Emily Correal led the way for the Tribe on Monday
night, posting her eighth career double-double with a 13 points on 5-of-11
shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Senior Katherine DeHenzel scored a team-high 16 points with four rebounds
and seven steals, while junior Jaclyn McKenna netted nine and grabbed eight
rebounds.
At the beginning of the game on Monday night, the Spiders
jumped out to an early, 12-4 lead over the College in the first 5:35 minutes of
the game. The Tribe responded right
back, however, with a 7-0 run of its own to cut the lead to 12-11. In the stretch, McKenna was key for the Green
and Gold, scoring four in the quick run.
The Tribe wasn't able to overtake the Spiders for a lead in
the first 20 minutes, as Richmond fired off a 17-6 run over the final 5:11
minutes of the half to take a 35-24 lead over William and Mary in to the locker
room.
In the first half, the Tribe was led by Correal who totaled
seven points and seven rebounds. McKenna
and DeHenzel each had six points in the first half, while DeHenzel also had
four steals. As a team, the College shot
11-of-27 (40.7%) from the floor, holding UR to just 37.8% shooting on 14-of-37
from the floor.
At the start of the second half, the College stormed out and
cut the lead to 35-29 on a three from DeHenzel and a layup from junior Chanel
Murchison. The Spiders came right back,
however, responding with an 11-2 stretch to take a 46-32 lead at the 15:28 mark
of the second half.
Richmond would not look back from there, shooting 20-of-33
(60.6%) in the second half to pull away for a 77-57 win over William and Mary.
Bright spots for the Tribe in the loss included junior
Chanel Murchison and freshman Jazmen Boone.
Murchison tied her career-high with seven points, going 3-of-5 from the
floor, while Boone scored six points off the bench for the College.
The William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team will
return to Williamsburg on Friday, November 18 to host Navy at Kaplan
Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
