McDowell Scores 1,000th Career Point But Valiant Comeback Falls Short at Northeastern

Boston, Mass. - Despite a valiant second-half comeback, the William and Mary men's basketball team fell on the road at Northeastern, 70-67, on Monday night. Junior forward Quinn McDowell, who led the Tribe with 22 points, scored his 1,000th career point during the Tribe setback. W&M drops to 6-14 overall and 2-7 in league play, while Northeastern improved to 5-15 on the season and 1-8 in league action.

McDowell was 6-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line, while adding six rebounds. With 13:44 remaining in the first half, the Mason, Ohio, native scored on a scoop lay-up and converted the conventional 3-point play in scoring his 1,000th career point. He is the 33rd player in Tribe history and the seventh under head coach Tony Shaver to score 1,000 points. Freshman Tim Rusthoven finished with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds, while fellow classmate and reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Brandon Britt tallied 11 points and a career-high six assists.

After the Tribe scored the opening bucket of the game, Northeastern went a 16-2 run to open up a double-digit advantage. Joel Smith and Chaisson Allen highlighted the run with six and five points, respectively, as Allen capped the spurt with a steal and fast-break lay-up to give NU a 16-4 lead at the 14:09 mark.

The Tribe pulled within nine at 16-7 on McDowell's conventional 3-point play at the 13:44 mark and then again following a McDowell jumper midway through the opening 20 minutes. The Huskies responded with a 10-2 run to push the margin to its largest of the opening half. Smith again was the catalyst with eight of NU's 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Kauri Black capped the run with a follow-up dunk. The bucket gave Northeastern at 32-15 lead with 4:50 remaining and forced a W&M timeout. W&M cut the margin to 11 on a fast-break lay-up from Britt off a dish from freshman Julian Boatner with 29 seconds remaining, but the Huskies took a 38-25 advantage to the locker room as Black scored on a lay-up at the halftime horn.

After a Brit 3-pointer closed the NU lead to 41-30 two minutes into the second half, NU scored seven straight points to push the lead to its largest at 18 for the first time. Black followed back-to-back Jonathan Lee lay-ups with one of his own to push the Husky lead to 48-30 with 15:36 remaining.

The margin remained 18, 12:43, following an Allen lay-up at the 12:36 mark, before the Tribe started it claw it way back into the game. W&M scored 10 of the game's next 13 points, closing to within 11 points. Britt followed up a Kyle Gaillard tip-in with a fast-break lay-up narrowing the gap to 56-45 with 8:21 remaining.

Smith answered with a tough jumper from the left side, but W&M again responded as it scored eight of the game's next 10 points to pull within seven points. Rusthoven scored four of the Tribe's eight points, before a pair of McDowell free throws at the 4:52 closed the gap to 60-53.

Allen buried a dagger 3-pointer, hitting a difficult long range triple to extended the margin back to double digits on the ensuing NU possession. The Huskies led 65-54 following a pair of free throws at the 1:36 mark, before W&M make a last gasp run. The Tribe used a 7-1 run cut the deficit to 66-61 with 24.7 seconds remaining. McDowell knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing, before his free throws close the gap to five.

Northeastern was able to hit just enough free throws over the final 25 seconds to keep the Tribe at bay. The Huskies were 4-of-6 from the charity stripe over the stretch though the Tribe pulled within three points, 70-67, with just a second remaining on a Rusthoven lay-up. W&M head coach Tony Shaver attempted to use his final timeout of the game following the bucket, but the officiating crew did not grant it and Northeastern in-bounded the ball to run out the clock.

W&M finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the floor and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the charity stripe. After shooting 47 percent from 3-point range over the last three games, the Tribe struggled from long range hitting just 16.7 percent (3-of-18), including a 0-of-10 clip in the first half. Northeastern finished the contest shooting 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field and connected on six 3-pointers.

The Green and Gold held a 39-27 advantage on the glass. Sophomore guard Matt Rum led the W&M effort on the boards with a career-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points and two assists. Senior forward Marcus Kitts tallied eight points and six rebounds. Smith led the Huskies with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, while Allen scored 19 points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals.
