Despite a valiant second-half comeback, the William and Mary men's
basketball team fell on the road at Northeastern, 70-67, on Monday
night. Junior forward Quinn McDowell, who led the Tribe with 22 points,
scored his 1,000th career point during the Tribe setback. W&M drops
to 6-14 overall and 2-7 in league play, while Northeastern improved to
5-15 on the season and 1-8 in league action.
McDowell was 6-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 9-of-9 from the
free throw line, while adding six rebounds. With 13:44 remaining in the
first half, the Mason, Ohio, native scored on a scoop lay-up and
converted the conventional 3-point play in scoring his 1,000th career
point. He is the 33rd player in Tribe history and the seventh under head
coach Tony Shaver to score 1,000 points. Freshman Tim Rusthoven
finished with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along
with five rebounds, while fellow classmate and reigning CAA Rookie of
the Week Brandon Britt tallied 11 points and a career-high six assists.
After the Tribe scored the opening bucket of the game, Northeastern
went a 16-2 run to open up a double-digit advantage. Joel Smith and
Chaisson Allen highlighted the run with six and five points,
respectively, as Allen capped the spurt with a steal and fast-break
lay-up to give NU a 16-4 lead at the 14:09 mark.
The Tribe pulled within nine at 16-7 on McDowell's conventional
3-point play at the 13:44 mark and then again following a McDowell
jumper midway through the opening 20 minutes. The Huskies responded with
a 10-2 run to push the margin to its largest of the opening half. Smith
again was the catalyst with eight of NU's 10 points, including a pair
of 3-pointers, while Kauri Black capped the run with a follow-up dunk.
The bucket gave Northeastern at 32-15 lead with 4:50 remaining and
forced a W&M timeout. W&M cut the margin to 11 on a fast-break
lay-up from Britt off a dish from freshman Julian Boatner with 29
seconds remaining, but the Huskies took a 38-25 advantage to the locker
room as Black scored on a lay-up at the halftime horn.
After a Brit 3-pointer closed the NU lead to 41-30 two minutes into
the second half, NU scored seven straight points to push the lead to its
largest at 18 for the first time. Black followed back-to-back Jonathan
Lee lay-ups with one of his own to push the Husky lead to 48-30 with
15:36 remaining.
The margin remained 18, 12:43, following an Allen lay-up at the
12:36 mark, before the Tribe started it claw it way back into the game.
W&M scored 10 of the game's next 13 points, closing to within 11
points. Britt followed up a Kyle Gaillard tip-in with a fast-break
lay-up narrowing the gap to 56-45 with 8:21 remaining.
Smith answered with a tough jumper from the left side, but W&M
again responded as it scored eight of the game's next 10 points to pull
within seven points. Rusthoven scored four of the Tribe's eight points,
before a pair of McDowell free throws at the 4:52 closed the gap to
60-53.
Allen buried a dagger 3-pointer, hitting a difficult long range
triple to extended the margin back to double digits on the ensuing NU
possession. The Huskies led 65-54 following a pair of free throws at the
1:36 mark, before W&M make a last gasp run. The Tribe used a 7-1
run cut the deficit to 66-61 with 24.7 seconds remaining. McDowell
knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing, before his free throws
close the gap to five.
Northeastern was able to hit just enough free throws over the final
25 seconds to keep the Tribe at bay. The Huskies were 4-of-6 from the
charity stripe over the stretch though the Tribe pulled within three
points, 70-67, with just a second remaining on a Rusthoven lay-up.
W&M head coach Tony Shaver attempted to use his final timeout of the
game following the bucket, but the officiating crew did not grant it
and Northeastern in-bounded the ball to run out the clock.
W&M finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the
floor and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the charity stripe. After
shooting 47 percent from 3-point range over the last three games, the
Tribe struggled from long range hitting just 16.7 percent (3-of-18),
including a 0-of-10 clip in the first half. Northeastern finished the
contest shooting 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field and connected on
six 3-pointers.
The Green and Gold held a 39-27 advantage on the glass. Sophomore
guard Matt Rum led the W&M effort on the boards with a career-high
eight rebounds to go along with seven points and two assists. Senior
forward Marcus Kitts tallied eight points and six rebounds. Smith led
the Huskies with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, while Allen
scored 19 points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists
and had three steals.
W&M returns home to host Delaware for its third game in five
days on Wednesday, Jan. 24. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Kaplan
