HARRISONBURG, VA -
The William and Mary women's basketball team led well into the second
half Thursday night at James Madison, before a rain of threes gave the
home team the win, 72-59.
Led by a 4-6 performance behind the arc from Jaclyn McKenna (Huntington, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Mathieu (Waterboro, Maine), the Tribe went into the half ahead by four at 35-31. A stout defensive effort, spearheaded by senior captain Lindsey Moller (Longmont, Colo.),
limited the Dukes to just 29% shooting, and kept JMU's Dawn Evans (the
nation's scoring leader) without a field goal in the half.
The second half looked to be developing along the same lines, but
ultimately a short bench and mounting fouls caught up with the Tribe and
allowed James Madison to take the lead. W&M stayed in front for
the first seven minutes of the half, and went ahead by as many as six on
a Taylor Hilton (Washington, D.C.) jumper at the 18:45 mark (39-33), but James Madison took the lead for good at 47-44 with just over 13 minutes remaining.
For the game, the Tribe was led by junior Taysha Pye (Bronx, N.Y.)
who continued her tradition of playing well against the Dukes with 22
points and seven rebounds. McKenna shot 3-6 from behind the arc and
6-12 overall for a season-high 16 points. Captain Katherine DeHenzel (Bowie, Md.) dished out seven assists, while Moller and Katy Oblinger (Altoona, Pa.) each had three assists and zero turnovers. DeHenzel also had more steals herself (four) than JMU had as a team (three).
William and Mary returns home for the next two games, hosting George
Mason Sunday at 2 p.m. and Old Dominion next Thursday at 7 p.m.
