Baltimore, Md. - Former William and Mary men's soccer standout Carlos Garcia helped the Baltimore Blast to the National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) Championship on Saturday night. The Blast defeated the Rockford Rampage, 13-10, in the title game at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore to claim the franchises fifth league championship (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009) in the last seven seasons. Garcia played on four of the championship squads after being a fourth round pick of the Blast in 2003.
In the championship game, Garcia scored the lone goal in the third period to extend Baltimore's halftime lead to three, 11-8. During the regular season, he appeared in all 18 games for the Blast in helping the squad to the regular season crown with a 14-4 record. He ranked third on the team and 11th in the NISL in points with 37 on 12 goals and 12 assists. His 12 helpers were the second-best total on the Blast and ranked sixth in the NISL.
The National Indoor Soccer League was launched in September of 2008 and consists of five founding members; the Baltimore Blast, La RaZa de Monterrey, Philadelphia KiXX, Rockford Rampage and the Massachusetts Twisters. The NISL has formed a working relationship with the United Soccer Leagues (USL) and has received provisional membership in the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). The NISL took over for the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), which dissolved in May.
At W&M, Garcia, who played from 1999-2002 for the Green and Gold, was a three-time All-CAA selection, leading the Tribe to the NCAA Tournament on a trio of occasions. The College won CAA Championship in both 1999 and 2000. Garcia was also a two-time First-Team NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection in 2001 and 2002. He graduated from the College as one of the program's all-time leading scorers. Garcia still ranks second in career points (121) as well as third in career goals (45), assists (31) and game-winning goals (12) at W&M. During his senior campaign in 2002, the College advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and finished with a 15-8-1 overall record.
