WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary Quarterback Club announced its 2008 award winners at the year-end banquet on Sunday evening. Ten Tribe players were honored at the event: senior wide receiver Elliott Mack (President's Award); senior linebacker Josh Rutter (Senior Leadership Award); senior quarterback Jake Phillips (Offensive Player of the Year); senior cornerback Derek Cox (Defensive Player of the Year); junior place kicker Brian Pate (Special Teams Player of the Year); freshman running back/kick returner Jonathan Grimes (Rookie of the Year); junior tight end Rob Varno (Offensive Lineman of the Year); junior defensive end Adrian Tracy (Defensive Lineman of the Year); freshman wide receiver Ryan Moody (Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year); and freshman linebacker T.J. Despite missing three games due to injury, Mack turned in a solid senior season for the Tribe. In addition to displaying tremendous leadership, the co-captain recorded 29 receptions for 445 yards with three touchdowns. Mack registered a touchdown catch in three consecutive games early in the season before posting his best effort of the '08 campaign with an eight-catch, 119-yard performance in the victory at Delaware. The Irvington, N.J., native finished his career at the College ranked just outside the program's top 10 in career receiving yards (1,890) and touchdown receptions (14).

Like Phillips, Cox also became a two-time all-conference selection by earning second-team honors in '08. The Winterville, N.C., native ranked tied for fifth in the CAA with four interceptions and returned a pair of those for touchdowns. While opposing quarterbacks often elected to avoid throwing to his side of the field, Cox ranked 11th in the league with 0.82 passes defended per game. He also made a significant impact on special teams returning punts, averaging 16.4 yards per return with a pair of touchdowns (89 yards vs. Northeastern and 80 yards vs. Richmond). Cox finished his career with 172 tackles and nine interceptions.

The Fredericksburg, Va., native also converted all 41 of his extra-point attempts and ranked 17th in the country with 1.8 field goals made per game.

One of the top true freshmen in the nation, Grimes garnered a long list of accolades in '08. Chosen as the CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year, he also earned first-team all-conference honors as a kick returner and was a second-team selection as a running back. Grimes averaged a league-best 24.5 yards per return, with his season-long of 97 yards (for a touchdown) against Villanova. He led the CAA and ranked 12th nationally with 162 all-purpose ypg. The Palmyra, N.J., native averaged 84.5 ypg rushing and established a W&M freshman rushing record with 929 yards on the ground. In addition to scoring seven rushing touchdowns, Grimes also hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions to go with his 39 catches for 314 yards receiving.

One of the league's top pass-catching tight ends, Varno earned second-team all-CAA honors after finishing the year with 36 receptions for 397 yards and three touchdowns. During the final four games of the season, the Wilmington, N.C., native averaged more than four catches per contest.
