WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior Greg Sexton has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Year, while junior Tim Park and senior Brent McWhorter have been named to the all-conference first and second teams, respectively. Sexton becomes the Tribe's second player to garner the league's top honor, as Chris Rahl earned the accolade in 2004. The honors were announced on Tuesday evening at the CAA Awards Banquet in Wilmington, N.C.
One of the nation's top offensive players, Sexton led the conference in batting average (.455) and hits (95). The batting average ranked second nationally, while the hits total established a W&M single-season record. Additionally, the third baseman was second in the CAA in RBI (61) and on-base percentage (.514), while he ranked among the league's top 10 in six other categories. The outstanding senior season capped off one of the most impressive careers in the program's history. The Suffolk, Va., native is the W&M career record holder for batting average (.380), hits (313), doubles (71), games played (217) and at-bats (824). His name also appears on five other all-time top-10 lists at the College.
Joining Sexton on the all-conference first team is Park, who was selected as the CAA's best utility player. Park led the league in runs scored (64) and ranked second in hits (86), while he was also among the conference's top 10 in four additional categories. The Silver Spring, Md., native's runs total ranks fourth on W&M's single-season list, while his hits total and batting average (.391) rank fifth and sixth, respectively, at the College.
McWhorter garnered a spot on the all-conference second team after an outstanding senior season. The second baseman finished the year with a .356 batting average and a team-high 19 doubles. The Atlanta, Ga., native ranked second in the CAA with 58 runs scored, while his doubles total was tied for seventh in the conference. He also ranked among the league's top 10 in hits (54) and triples (three). McWhorter finished his career with a .322 batting average and ranks ninth all-time at W&M in triples (nine).
The Tribe finished the 2007 season with a winning record (29-25) and earned six more victories than last year.
