WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team defeated Towson in both games of its doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to earn a series sweep against the Tigers. Head Coach
Frank Leoni recorded his 300th career victory in the afternoon's first game, a 6-0 Tribe triumph. W&M won the second game, 15-8.
With the wins, the College improves to 12-11 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The losses drop Towson to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in CAA action.
Freshman RHP Kevin Landry earned the win in the first game, pitching all seven innings without surrendering a run. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three. Junior LHP Pete Vernon came out of the bullpen and registered the victory in the second game, pitching 3.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out three. It was Vernon's second win in as many days, as he picked up the victory in Saturday's 4-3 extra-innings thriller.
Right fielder Robbie Nickle led the Tribe offensively in the first game, going 2-for-2 with a home run and a pair of RBI. Designated hitter Tim Park also came up big, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored.
W&M hit four home runs in the second game, as Park went deep twice and Nickle and third baseman Greg Sexton each belted one apiece. In addition to the blasts, Park went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Sexton went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Shortstop Lanny Stanfield was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI, and left fielder Greg Maliniak was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Mike Sheridan and DH Aaron Hurwitz also tallied two hits apiece.
"We had a very good performance today and a very good weekend overall," Head Coach
Frank Leoni said. "While we struggled in our mid-week games this week, the conference games are what matter most."
In the opening game, the Tribe did most of its scoring in the bottom of the third, plating five runs. Catcher Jeff Wera led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second when center fielder Paul Juliano put down a sacrifice bunt. After Stanfield walked to put runners on first and second, Park ripped a RBI double to center. Second baseman Brent McWhorter reached base when he hit the ball through Towson's first baseman's legs, as Stanfield and Park both scored. Sexton then took first when he was hit by a pitch, and Sheridan followed with an infield single to load the bases. Nickle brought home McWhorter when he was hit by a pitch, while Maliniak drove in the final score.
Park laced a two-out double to center the following inning, but the Tribe was unable to bring him.
W&M extended its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Nickle blasted a 1-0 offering over the right-center field fence. That proved to be more than enough runs, as Landry recorded the shutout.
The Tribe wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second game, as Park and Sexton each sent solo shots over the right field fence in the bottom of the first.
While junior RHP Pat Kantakevich was perfect through the first two innings, the Tigers recorded three runs in the top of the third. Second baseman Gary Helmick took first when he was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, and third baseman Steve Yarsinsky brought him in with a double to right. Two batters later, center fielder Kyle Skellchock drove in the second run with a single to left, while right fielder Brian Conley followed with a triple to right center that plated the final run.
The College evened the score at three in the bottom half of the inning when Park hit his second home run of the game. With one out, the Silver Spring, Md., native took the first pitch he saw over the center field fence.
Towson responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage. Catcher Ryan Schreiter led off the inning with a walk, and DH Jason Stifler followed with a home run over the right-center field fence.
W&M reclaimed the lead, 6-5, with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nickle drew a walk to start the frame. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Towson's catcher. Maliniak followed with an RBI single to right, and he moved up to third when Hurwitz doubled. Two batters later, Stanfield plated Maliniak with a single to center. After Park was hit by a pitch to load the bases, RHP Zach Umberger threw a wild pitch, brining in another run and moving all the Tribe runners up a base. However, Umberger retired the next two hitters to get out of the jam.
The Tigers evened the score at six with a run in the top of the fifth. Skellchock and Conley drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. While first baseman A.J. Tinnirella grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, Schreiter followed with a single through the left side that plated Skellchock. After throwing a ball in his first pitch to Stifler, Kantakevich was relieved by senior RHP Warrik Staines, who got out of the inning without allowing another score.
TU scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. Helmick drew a walk to start the inning, and Yarsinsky took first when he was hit by a pitch. Shortstop Nick Natoli reached on a fielder's choice, and Skellchock recorded an RBI single up the middle. Junior LHP Pete Vernon then relieved Staines and surrendered a two-out RBI single to Tinnirella.
The Tribe charged back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-8 lead. Stanfield and Park began the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. McWhorter then put down a sacrifice bunt, but Stanfield got caught in a rundown. Guez came in to pinch run for McWhorter, and Sexton followed with an RBI single to right. Sheridan plated Guez with a sacrifice fly to center, while Nickle punctuated the four-run inning with a blast over the right field fence.
The Green and Gold tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh. Hurwitz reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Juliano. Stanfield plated Hurwitz with a single through the left side.
W&M scored four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to build a commanding 15-8 advantage. The Tribe loaded the bases with no outs, and Maliniak brought in two runs with a single to center. Hurwitz followed with an RBI single through the right side, while Juliano plated the fourth run with a single up the middle.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Norfolk State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
