RICHMOND, VA - The Colonial Athletic Association announced today that William and Mary senior
Jeff Kader (Geneva, OH) has been selected as the Most Outstanding Performer of the 2005 CAA Men's Tennis Tournament.
Kader led W&M to its first conference title since 1990 this weekend, going undefeated in his three singles and three doubles matches. A first team all-league pick in singles, he won all three of his No. 1 matches in straight sets, starting with a 6-1, 6-2 win over second team all-conference selection John Tully (Delaware). In the final two rounds, Kader defeated both of the CAA's 2005 Co-Players of the Year in straight sets, beginning with his 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 33 Izak van der Merwe (Old Dominion) in the semifinals. In the championship match, he defeated No. 20 Arnaud Lecloerec (Virginia Commonwealth), 6-3, 7-5, helping the Tribe to upset the nine-time defending champion Rams. The wins helped Kader move up 18 spots to No. 48 in the national singles rankings.
Kader and freshman
Alex Cojanu (Hallandale, FL), the CAA Co-Rookie of the Year, won all three of their No. 2 doubles matches, helping the Tribe to win the doubles point in each match of the tournament. The pair, who earned second team All-CAA honors, won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches by a score of 8-2, then defeated VCU's Daniel Lohf and Sebastien Ripoll, 8-6, in the final.
W&M is currently ranked 59th in the nation and has a record of 11-14, after winning seven of its last eight matches. The Tribe will be making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its first since 1999, starting with first round action on May 13 or 14. The 64-team NCAA Tournament field will be announced on live national television the afternoon of Wednesday May 4.
