William and Mary Announces Additions to Football Staff

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - William and Mary head football coach Jimmye Laycock announced the addition of two more coaches to the W&M staff, in addition to the promotion of a current Tribe assistant. In addition to new defensive coordinator Jim Pletcher, also joining the staff are running backs coach Steven Jerry and tight ends coach Greg Shockley, while current Tribe assistant Trevor Andrews moves to defensive line coach, and will also serve as the recruiting coordinator.

"I am happy with the staff we have assembled for 2004," Laycock said. "You have to expect turnover when you've hired quality people and we've had our share this season. But with new coaches come fresh ideas, and we are excited to start working together to prepare the team for the challenges of the coming year."

Jerry comes to W&M from Virginia State, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Prior to that, Jerry was the head coach of a pair of arenafootball2 squads, the Greensboro Prowlers and the Roanoke Steam. Jerry also served as the tight ends coach at East Tennessee State for the 2001 season. Jerry spent the 2000 season in Williamsburg, where he served as an offensive assistant for W&M. From Jan. 1997 until early in 2000, Jerry served in multiple capacities at Central Florida, working as a tight ends coach, an assistant strength and conditioning coach and an assistant track and field coach. He also has collegiate experience at Siena College and his alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Jerry was an assistant strength coach at UNC in the summer of 1994. A 1994 graduate of UNC, Jerry received bachelor's degrees in both sociology and communications.

Andrews moves to defensive line coach after serving the past three seasons as a defensive assistant for the Tribe. In 2003, Andrews coached the Tribe cornerbacks, including first-team all-league selection Billy Parker. He came to the College after spending the 2000 season as an assistant at Randolph-Macon College, where he worked as the secondary coach and special teams coordinator. After earning his BS in physical education from Dayton in 1998, Andrews accepted a graduate position at Illinois Wesleyan University and coached the secondary.

Shockley will serve his first season as the Tribe's tight ends coach. Shockley came to Williamsburg from Virginia Tech, where he was a player and then a graduate assistant coach under Frank Beamer. While working at VT, Shockley worked primarily with the offensive line and tight ends. He also directed the defensive scout team during practice and was responsible for opponent film breakdown. The Hokies were selected to postseason bowl games in each of his three seasons as a graduate assistant coach.

All hirings are subject to the approval of the College's Board of Visitors. Full biographies of all new staff members are available on TribeAthletics.com. The Tribe began spring practice on Wednesday, March 17, and will conclude spring drills with the annual Green and Gold Game on April 10 at Zable Stadium. W&M begins the 2004 season on Sept. 4 at North Carolina.
