Lynchburg, VA - Senior All-American candidate
Lang Campbell (Winchester, VA) threw for 368 yards, including 221 to senior wide receiver
Dominique Thompson (Durham, NC), as the 18th-ranked College of William and Mary defeated Liberty, 37-17, Saturday night in Lynchburg.
In the first-ever meeting between the schools, Campbell completed 19-of-30 passes to surpass the 300-yard mark for the second time in as many games and the third time this season. Thompson pulled in a career-high 10 catches for a personal-best 221 yards, which ranks as the third-best single-game performance in W&M history. The College piled up a season-high 498 total yards of offense to the Flames' 264. In a masterful offensive performance, the Tribe converted 9-of-18 third-down attempts, averaged 6.8 yards per play and did not allow a sack.
W&M opened the scoring on its first possession of the game, covering 80 yards on 10 plays to set up a 21-yard field goal by all-conference kicker
Greg Kuehn (Potomac Falls, VA). It was Kuehn's 35th career field goal, moving him into a tie for ninth place on the Atlantic 10 career list. The highlight of the drive came on a 55-yard pass completion to Thompson, as Campbell completed 2-of-4 pass attempts on the drive for 63 yards.
On its ensuing drive, Liberty pulled even on a 41-yard field goal by freshman Zacry Kolegue with 5:24 remaining in the opening frame. The Flames went 58 yards on 10 plays.
The Tribe continued the early offensive fireworks on its next possession, as Campbell completed passes to
John Pitts (Durham, NC) and sophomore tight end
Jordan Troester (Providence Forge, PA) for 25 and 28 yards, respectively, to open the drive, but more significantly, he became just the ninth player in College history to amass 4,000 career total offensive yards on the completion to Pitts. Sophomore
Elijah Brooks (Largo, MD) capped the 11-play, 84-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining in the first quarter. Campbell had an outstanding first period, completing 7-of-9 attempts for 137 yards.
After a Liberty punt, Campbell and the Tribe offense continued to move at will against the Flames, driving 53 yards on eight plays to set up Campbell's fifth rushing touchdown of the season, a 1-yard sneak. With the score, Campbell became the first W&M quarterback to rush for five touchdowns in a season, since
David Corley, Jr. accomplished the feat in 2001, and the College held a 17-3 advantage early in the second quarter.
W&M's offensive production may have sparked the Tribe defense, as the unit came out and caused a turnover on the Flames' next possession. Junior all-conference linebacker
Travis McLaurin (Wilmington, DE) picked up a fumble at the Tribe 46-yard line and returned it six yards to the LU 48-yard line. It was McLaurin's third fumble recovery of the season, with the other two coming in the season-opener at North Carolina. Mike McCarthy (Mechanicsburg, PA) forced the fumble, and then for the eighth time this season, W&M converted a forced turnover into points.
Kuehn extended the College's lead to 20-3 with 2:56 remaining in the opening half, as the Tribe moved 46 yards on 10 plays after the McLaurin return. Campbell completed 3-of-4 passes on the drive for 44 yards to go over the 200-yard mark in the first half alone. He went 11-for-16 through the air in the first half for 208 yards. With the field goal, Kuehn continued his assent up the A10 career chart, moving into a tie for eighth place with former Connecticut kicker Domingo Carlos (36).
The W&M defense kept the momentum rolling after a short kickoff by Kuehn, as the Flames took over in Tribe territory. After a short pass completion on first down, consecutive sacks by
Brian Williamson (Nakina, NC) and junior all-conference candidate
Adam O'Connor (Greensboro, NC) forced the Flames to punt and W&M took a 20-3 lead into the break.
If Liberty had any hope of a Tribe letdown in the second half, the College quickly squashed that idea, marching 64 yards on seven plays on its opening drive. Senior tailback
Jon Smith's (Cincinnati, OH) 1-yard plunge increased the Tribe advantage to 27-3.
The Flames responded with an 80-yard, eight-play drive that was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Sam Gado, which cut the deficit to 27-10. Liberty carried its surge over to the defensive side, forcing the Tribe three plays and out on its next possession.
After
Mike Mesi's (Eatontown, NJ) 39-yard punt, the Flames took over at their 24-yard line with a chance to cut the lead to 10, but the Tribe defense rose to the occasion and made a statement of its own. After yielding a first down on the initial play from scrimmage, sophomore linebacker
Ryan Nickell (Yorktown, VA) registered his first career sack on first down and 10 from the LU 37-yard line. After a short passing gain on second down, junior end
Jonas Watson (Hampton, VA) brought Liberty quarterback Paul Troth down again for an 8-yard loss, forcing the Flames to punt.
On the Tribe's ensuing possession, the Campbell-to-Thompson connection continued to shred the Flames' defense, as the pair hooked up for completions of 30 and 16 yards to set up Kuehn's third field goal of the game, a 28-yarder, that pushed the W&M advantage to 30-10 with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter. It was Kuehn's third three-field goal game in his last four contests and the sixth of his career. It also brought his career total to 37, which stands alone as the seventh-best career mark in A10 history.
On the drive, Thompson recorded his career-best 10th catch of the game to bring his receiving total to 221 yards, which ranks behind only David Conklin's 240-yard performance against VMI on Sept. 13, 1997, and Mike Sutton's 226-yard effort at Marshall on Nov. 5, 1983.
W&M capped its scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by Smith that increased the margin to 37-10 with 3:23 remaining in regulation. The score was set up by junior safety
James Miller's (Norfolk, VA) third interception of the season. Miller picked off Troth at the W&M 21-yard line and returned it 70 yards to the Flames' 9-yard line. It was the Tribe's longest interception return since Miller took one back 77 yards for a score in the 2003 season-finale at Richmond.
Smith carried 19 times for 51 yards and two scores, brining his career rushing total to 1,991 yards, just nine shy of the 2,000-yard mark. Smith's second rushing touchdown was the Tribe's season-best fourth of the game.
The Flames capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run with less than a minute remaining in the game to set the final margin at 37-17.
Junior cornerback
Stephen Cason (Richmond, VA) had an outstanding game to pace the defense, sharing team-high honors with eight total tackles, in addition to 1.5 sacks, three pass breakups and 2.5 total tackles for loss. The Tribe defense recorded a season-high seven sacks, led by Watson with two. O'Connor registered 1.5 sacks and has now recorded at least half of a sack in four of the Tribe's five games this season, including three straight.
The College has won four consecutive games after a season-opening loss at Division I-A North Carolina on Sept. 4, which matches last season's four-game winning to close out the campaign.
W&M returns to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. A10 game against Rhode Island on Homecoming Weekend in Williamsburg.
